Living in nebraska is a lot worse than you would think...

I am sorry but I need a place to rant. After the past week of snow on the front range I was stoked to get out for my second trip. I am the co captain of the ski and snowboard club at the University of nebraska. The club has about 100 members 15 of which are pretty hardcore weekend warriors.

Since the club is a very social one our Captain (idiot) thought it would be a good idea to have a ugly sweater party this Saturday. I was fine with it because I was under the assumption that my crew would skip the party to SKI! I was wrong. Only one other guy from the posse was down to go out making it not financially feasible.

So instead of skiing this weekend I will have to drink and be lame here in the h@ll that is Nebraska. I hope you guys enjoy it because when I graduate mountains are the first thing on my list of life goals. So appreciate what you have.

Should've made the ugle sweater party at a ski hill.

Hey, be thankful for what you have as a college student. Wait until you're married with kids and you no longer live close enough to mountains which all equates to one to two ski trips per year...if you're lucky.

Drink, have fun and take it out on the mountain during your next trip. And give a snow bunny some kisses. Why? BECAUSE YOU CAN!

Regards,
Mark

That was my initial assumption about the ugly sweater party!

But hey, add some drinks at the lodge or at a cabin rental and I don't see why there's any reason the ugly sweater/drinking party shouldn't be at the hill! If your captain knew anything about college ski teams, it's that most of them (excepting the super hard-core ones) are drinking teams with a skiing problem!

I went to UNL in the 90's, and I had no idea there was a ski club! I didn't ski once in my whole undergrad career.

Of course, if you can go to grad school somewhere like Colorado or Montana you can make up for lost time!

Do you ever go to the little ski areas in Iowa or Missouri? And is the tiny little ski hill between Lincoln and Omaha open? I remember that place closed due to lack of snow for several years in a row...
that does suck when a ski club gets in the way of skiing.. I agree the sweater party should be at a ski area...

since you are a steeze monkey (i found that humorous, not quite sure why), raid your local ice rink's back door. Load up a truck or wheel barrows or whatever with ice rink snow, have an urban jib session. Its sort of like skiing and would be "interesting" while drunk and wearing ugly sweaters. better thought, do it before the party.

kick the crap out of your gaper captain for me, who the hell would let wearing ugly sweaters get in the way of skiing??
I think you're all missing the most basic point...Who the hell would have an ugly sweater party for any reason, anywhere?

But then again, I don't understand skiers who live in Nebraska.

Yes, there is something that appears wrong with a state when spelled backwards is itself an actual location and where the N on the state football helmet stands for knowledge.

However [trust me with this] don’t let those dumb hick farmers fool you…if you gave them your net worth they’d burn it to free up table space. Believe me, those Nebraskans own more valuable ski in/out mansions here than anyone from Connecticut or Texas. Get to work and meet a husker who's family owns a place out here [sorry, you won't find them in the ski club] who'll also fly you out in one of their G5’s or a Netjets fractional this weekend. You can always call back tell the ski club to I-80 hop it up and catch you at the lift.

I have one every weekend. Of course, the sweater is under my ski parka, but watch out if you see me in the lodge.

//
//I thought ugly sweaters were the raison d'etre for skiing, just like ugly pants are for golf...

their lame, but you choose to go to school in nebraska what else could expect? why not transfer ASAP to somewhere cooler.

You going to come back with some excuse about how its paid for there, this is where you got accepted. whatever. I dont care and niether should you. If you can afford to go to college its not worth going(right now). You made every choice to be where your at right now.

quit your crying. You made your choices, don't cry about them.

You can have it all if you choose. No sympathy from me. you dig your grave, you lie in it!

Actually, I love the people who complain about other people complaining.

Not that I'm complaining about it or anything...

This thread is worthless without pics! College girls in tight fitting sweaters, albeit ugly sweaters.

I do agree and it really is getting old. A bunch of whiners who set their lives up and then complain about it. "I can't, I can't, I can't"

They need to grow some balls and follow thier dreams.

Amen

I'm pretty sure that SN isn't complaining about being in a flat land cow humping state (even though that is how the thread is titled) as much as he is his "friends" being lame. he does however mention that not being in nebraska would improve his situation.
In fact I can remember him (in another thread) defending nebraska as a place to live for a skier, given it's close proximity to Colorado.

I personally say never live further than 20 minutes from a ski area (regardless how crappy, you can always vaca to better mountains), you'll be much happier that way. anytime anything stresses you, just go skiing.

I'd venture to guess that the cost of in state tuition in Nebraska versus the cost of out-of-state tuition "someplace cool" and/or the quality of the different engineering schools was a higher priority in the decision of where to prepare to earn a life long living than access to killer skiing did.

Psstttt SkiNeb,
If you miss skiing soooooo bad that your going to burst. You've done ski porn and it only last for a few minutes. I know you've tried your gear on in the bedroom which only makes it worst. YOU NEED HELP! Here's what I do.......

Maybe take a Junior Year Abroad in the Wastch?
I am a university student in Canada. It seems a lot of ski clubs are more about parties than skiing.

Does anybody in your group have a car? I would probably be easier to go as a small group than try to get everybody to come out.

I wouldn't worry too much about missing this week's snow. The conditions will only get better later in the season.

In any case, isn't it exam time?

Nope next week is dead week, which means half of classes are canceled so yeah. Turns out I might actually get some turns in because I convinced two guys to make it happen.

HA!! That's my boy, Tucker!!! I remember when I posted that. We had just bought him those new skis (see the price tag?) He wanted to go skiing right then, but it was nap time.

We compromised!

Here is another cute picture.... This was taken in the day care room at the ski hill. (notice he has that same little yellow blanket with him...)
