Recurring Paypal subscriptions

Thread Starter
In the past the subscription/supporter payment was set up as a recurring payment. A little less than a year ago it was brought to our attention and we decided to remove the auto subscribe so that our members would need to decide each year if they want to re-subscribe. The problem is this action on our part did not work retroactively into Paypal so if you did subscribe earlier than our switch over and did not uncheck the autorenew check box, Paypal will continue to try to auto pay Epicski each year.

If you wish to remove the auto renew process, here are the instructions from Paypal.

1. Log in to your PayPal account.
2. Click the My Account tab.
3. Click Profile at the top of the page.
4. Click the Recurring Payments link in the Financial Information column.
5. Find the merchant whose agreement you want to cancel, and click the View Payment link.
6. Click the Cancel button and follow the online instructions.

We are sorry for the oversight on our part to not notice this when we first setup the payment system.

Again, the auto payment is being done by Paypal and not Epicski at this point due to an oversight on our part during the setup process so you will need to take action through Paypal.

There has been some question recently about Auto Renewal of Supporter Subscriptions.

I hope that Dchan's post will help clear things up.

As always, thanks for your support.

hmmm....

My subscription automatically re-newed, but doesn't show in my paypal acount...

Same here.  When did you make the change?  The payment was on my November statement.

IIRC the change was made in the middle of last winter.

It is my understanding that we're dealing with a legacy default in the PayPal system that we may or may not have selected when we set up our account. In any event, when we found out it was set to "on" we turned it to "off," but that only worked going forward. The accounts that were set up prior to our noticing the default may still be turned to "on", and must now be turned off by the individual account holders.

Our apologies for the system.

Yes, but the proceedure provided by DChan doesn't show any recurring payments in paypal to turn off.

You followed the above procedure and did not see a Recurring Payments link at step 4? Please verify and we'll investigate.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was saying here:

Hi all,

Someone has notified us that the place that paypal pointed us is incorrect.

"After searching, I found the subscription buried in my transaction history back in March 2007 (not in a list of recurring payments); that's apparently where I needed to go to cancel the subscription."

Here's what I found today for instructions on canceling your recurring subscriptions:

Question :

How do I cancel a subscription?

Answer :
You can cancel a subscription up until the day of the next scheduled payment. Remember, this cancels all future scheduled payments for that subscription.

Here's how to do it:

1.  Log in to your PayPal account.
2.  Click History under My Account at the top of the page.
3.  Choose Subscriptions from the Show drop-down menu.
4.  Check the From box and change the date back to the year the subscription was created.
5.  Click Search, and then click Details.
6.  Click Cancel Subscription.
7.  Click Cancel Subscription again.

Actually the last advice from dchan is correct.

If you want to cancel this you need to haul up your transaction history and find the original date you subscribed.

Once you go far enough back (mine was in 2006) you will see the item listed as active.  Renewals such as 2008 or 2009 will not work to cancel.

Once you get to the active item, click on it.  You will then need to click on two buttons to cancel the subscription.

I'm not sure why it works this way, or why it doesn't show up in the subscription lists as indicated above, but that seems to be the way it works.

Lycka Till!

Hi everyone.

The admin team decided we should go ahead and "break" the process from our end by cancelling the subscriptions from our end. I finally got the right person on the phone from Paypal that now tells me we can "break the lock" that your paypal payments go to.

The big question now is I am not sure how integrated the new website is to our old paypal payments. You will most likely get an email saying we canceled your subscription. This does not mean your supporter status will be taken away.

More info to come shortly.

I assume this is the source of the disconcerting message in my in box that my subscription o Epic Ski had been canceled.  I also assume that my supporter status has not changed.  If I am wrong, please let me know.

I did verify that the supporter status of members, as of right now, has not changed. If the systems (paypal and Huddler) do talk to each other each night, this may change but from everything I'm seeing, I don't think so.

I'll be crossing my fingers tomorrow when I get up.

So the deed is now done.

All Paypal subscriptions that I could find have been cancelled.

What this means is any future payments will be "new subscriptions"

Any and all recurring subscription payments that were set up in the past should no longer attempt to auto renew.

If you had any active subscriptions, you should have gotten a "subscription cancelled" message from paypal.

This does not mean your supporter status has gone away, Only that the paypal system has been told not to auto renew your subscription and attempt to charge you.

We are working on how this will be integrated into the Huddler/Epicski system for the future.

I can confirm that my EpicSki PayPal subscription has been cancelled.  FWIW I renewed it a couple of before it expired last December and I'm pretty sure I didn't get double charged.  But it is good to know I won't get hit with it should I decide to fade away.. not planning to but good to know I can.  Thanks folks
