I've been to Colorado skiing for years but looks like this year I won't be able to get out until late March. I've never been this late. What can I really expect for snow and weather conditions?
You can expect to have an awesome time. Plenty of snow. Maybe a storm with fluffy pow, or maybe heavier snow with warmer temps and plenty of sun. March in CO is where it is at. My best day last year was 5/1 at A-basin, for a point of reference.
As the two previous posters noted, we had a very deep spring last year. Typically speaking, later March and April mean warmer sunny days interrupted by fast moving storms. Think skiing powder on a bluebird morning following a 8" storm overnight, eating lunch on the deck while working on your tan, and skiing corn and soft moguls in the afternoon. Best time to ski in Colorado, and yes, last year was pretty special too.
I ski somewhere out west in early April almost every year and have NEVER had a bad trip. Late March conditions are even more reliable. In most of the west March is the #1 month for snow accumulation. If it's warm, enjoy the spring conditiions and move a little higher up the mountain or a little more around toward the north. If it's cloudy it's probably snowing or about to snow so enjoy the fresh snow. Spring weather moves quickly so in a week long trip you may experience a lot of different conditions. ENJOY.
