NC and SE Bears First Turns 11-22-08 - Page 4

Snowshoe was great last Saturday morning with 6" of real snow last week, but the rain started around noon, about 35F and we were all miserable. I had to take off my gloves to prep my son's skis for a race and after that my gloves were completely saturated, weighed about ten pounds each. Sunday it got cold and they had managed to groom a nice surface although the base was thin. At least I was dry. It should be cold for the next two weeks so expect great conditions as they crank the snow guns on high, especially at night.

Sugar was nice last night, about 20F, no wind and some of the best skiing so far this season. Also expecting 2 solid weeks of cold, some of it dipping below zero, so expect excellent, excellent skiing and only getting better. The guns are blasting away on Whoopdie Do, which is always their last run to open.

j5 cat is an easy 2.75-3.0 hrs from atl depending on if you stop. Easy roads, good vertical, best snowmaking in NC imo. Max pitch +-25 degrees so no real challenge, but to get on the snow for a day from ATL it's a lot easier than boone.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it was great on Sat. morning but it was pretty good. I wholeheartedly agree with the miserable part though.

BTW, this is me; non tele-style.

Keep that cold air and snow guns blowing and I'll be dropping body parts all over the mountain Monday

I'll work on that.

Tomorrow night at Cat, and maybe Sat AM at Ober if they have Mogul Ridge open.

And if you are a good looking female, yes; I am a slut.

I would have remembered those pants.

Here's me, four years ago with my son just behind. That was before I took my first professional lessons and got rid of the "old style".

Just thought I would introduce myself with my first post--I usually ski Sugar 4 or 5 times a week. Usually have a red jacket with tan colored pants. First season at Sugar, in the past have been a Wintergreener

Ahh man Lady Salina and I have to go to Ontario this weekend. We will be gone for 2 weeks ,I am planning to ski at Blue mountain On this comming Wend. I figger day and night. I have a yearly Pig pickin on Sat befor we go, otherwise we could go Sat night bahhh.
Keep postin the days and I'm sure we will all get there the same day eventually.
If someone picks a day in 3 or 4 weeks from now with enough forwarning I can arrange for us to be there. So someone has to be a group organizer and plan LOL.
Well all that go this weekend have a great time!!!!

LOL Old Boot. If you want to meet people at Sugar in NC, in 3 to 4 weeks, that's fine with me, but I hope you don't mind if I don't meet you there, as I'll be in Vail, CO from Feb 14-21, and that would in 3 to 4 weeks. I thought you were coming with me, that was why I ordered the two 6 day ski passes?

Can I have his spot if he is backing out? It's paid for isn't it?
LOL, it is! Why waste a plane seat, but i thought it was you he was meeting in NC? You'll have to tell him something happened at the last minute and you just couldn't make it.

It gets even better. I'm supposed to be taking the family to Blue Knob for the gathering there Feb 19th-21st so I'm guessing any Bears around here will be heading up there too.
On the serious side I think that brabson is taking his family to Aspen that week so a NC/SC Bears GTC in CO might not be that far fetched.

Wolf Ridge Camos!

Y"all never been to Wolf Ridge. If you don't have camo, you can't run with the "Big Dogs"! Never in my life have I seen so much away from the camp site. And then some large drunk lady keep running over my skis in the lift line. I really would have said something to her, but she looked like she could whip my a$$.
Maybe we should have our Bear gathering there. Always safety in numbers.ya know.lol
It actually is not a bad place to ski on the weekdays. For me it is a 40 min ride. But you really have to wait to it gets fully open. They are pretty proud of the mountain and charge appropriately!
Anyone been to Sugar or Beech yet this weekend?

Maybe tomorrow some of those folks will do their civic duty and head to DC for the party there
I'm going skiing (or waiting) tomorrow. If anybody else is going Monday and prefers something else (Beech?) over Sugar post today and we'll change plans and go there instead
post #113 of 214
Gotta at least show up at work tomorrow...probably do App for night skiing at 6pm...no school tomorrow so kids will be skiing...or Boarding more likely

Well so last night i decided; "what the hell, i wanna ski!" woke up at 6am and decided i'd check out Cataloochee, i have never been there and it is the "closest". Plus "InaVanDownBytheRiver" said it was decent...

Start the drive, all is going well. A little bit of rain.... as soon as I reach North Georgia it starts snowing, and not crap flurries, real deal good snow. I start to regret not having my all season tires on instead I am running "Ultra High Performance Summer Tires" (Advans). As I watch the the jeep in front of me hit a patch of ice and spin off the road (stopped, they were fine), i switch my car into Snow mode and hope its fancy electronics will keep me inline in spite of crap tires for the conditions. I contemplated turning around and just calling it a day but i clutched to my idea that my car is a rally car and is built for this stuff (Mitsubishi Evolution) LOL.

I hoped that the crappy road conditions would make the crowds less, NOPE!!!. Man was this the worst skiing conditions I have ever experienced. I should have stayed home. 20 minute lift lines, people stepping all over my skis. It was terrible. I stayed about 1.5-2 hours. the crappy conditions caused the drive to last 4 hours...and i only stayed for 2 hours. not a good day at all.

One other crappy thing... one of the lifts at cataloochee hangs so low that upon pick up the chair actually disengaged my bindings. Yeah, figure out that math....the chair was about 4 inches off the ground. haha, the guy behind me was nice enough to grab it and bring it up the lift with him...thank god i am semi proficient on 1 ski or else i would have been one of the 100s of people today falling getting off the lift hahaha.

I'm not gonna write this place off just yet... I will give it another shot on a weekday or weekend that isn't a holiday and hopefully have better results.

Hope everyone else had a good weekend and got a few runs in.

John

^ remember, you picked their absolute busiest weekend of the year. Checkout SKINC headlines.
Yeah I knew they were gonna be busy, just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get up there, I skied sugar last year on martin luther king weekend and it wasn't nearly as bad, actually had a pleasant time last year. I was just hoping to get up and down the mountain a few time, didn't work out the way I expected. I'll probably give Cataloochee another shot on Friday.

Snowing here today...it's gorgeous. Should be good skiing this week..everywhere.

Sugar was sweet today. Upper lot was full at 9 but the lift lines were non-existent for the most part. Most of the traffic revolved around a couple events they had on Sugar Slalom. Snow was tasty, all runs are open, few patches of "Eastern hardpack" but nice. They didn't blow the snow guns either.

Lady Salina and I are stuck in Canada for a bit more by the looks of it. We went to Blue mountain the other night and the skking was really nice. Poor Salina though caught some bug and layed on a bench indoors all night between purging!!
Looks like I might have to go to Thompson Manitoba before we get to go home (look it up they have a ski hill LOL Magic or mystic mountain ,somthing like that) If I have to go we will not be back for next weekend But if I find out Monday that I don,t have to go.....NC next weekend and probibly Snow shoe on Friday on the way home, all depends on what work dictates to me.
Anyway keep us posted on your plans and maybe just maybe....
Oh ya we will be skiing tommorow night in Collingwood if Salina stops purging
