Good lawn mower post FastMan, not only are you a good skiing coach but you can also coach lawn mower piloting quite well i see.
As far as wheels go, yes, you will want something soft to learn this with, but once you get the hang of it you should be able to go to a harder race wheel. Do not however go to a wheel that is as hard as an indoor race wheel - 88a or higher. I use 82a usually, and i think im going to get a set of 85a wheels. I have found that with 78a and 82a, they heat up too much and cause a lot of wear really really fast, so i decided to get the 85a wheels. Also, make sure you have large wheels and a narrow chasis. Booting out can also be a problem. For my skates i have two sets of wheels - a set of very warn 80mm wheels that i use to rec skate with my friends and a set of non-warn 80mm wheels that i use to cross train on. The good set has a new set of abec 9 speed bearings and the old set has some quite warn abec 7 bearings. I try to take good care of the wheels and bearings so they stay fast and smooth. Get big wheels - 76mm or bigger, and good bearings - abec 5 or better. You will have a blast. Skiers Edge is too boring.
