An old thread, but since I was interested in trips from NJ to New England (travel times and distances), I thought this would be a good place to post:
Used a mapping tool for the following estimated travel times (and distances) to various skiing locations from central NJ (Toms River in this case)
TR to Camelback, PA ~2.5hrs (~140 miles 225km)
TR to Blue Mountain, PA ~2.5hrs (~135 miles 217km)
TR to Belleayre, NY ~3 hrs (200 miles 322km)
TR to Elk, PA ~3.25hrs (~200 miles 322km)
TR to Plattekill, NY ~3.5hrs (~220 miles 354km)
TR to Catamount, NY ~3.5hrs (~210 miles 338km)
TR to Butternut, MA ~3.75hrs (~220 miles 354km)
TR to Whitetail, PA ~4hrs (~250 miles 402km)
TR to Mount Snow, VT ~4.75hrs (~280 miles 451km)
TR to Magic Mountain, VT ~4.75hrs (~290 miles 467km)
TR to Blue Knob, PA ~4.75hrs (~300 miles 483km)
TR to Gore, NY ~4.75hrs (~300 miles 483km)
TR to Sunapee, NH ~5.5hrs (~330 miles 531km)
TR to Whiteface, NY ~5.5hrs (~350 miles 563km)
TR to Killington, VT ~5.5hrs (~320 miles 515km)
TR to Wisp, MD ~5.5hrs (~340 miles 547km)
TR to Sugarbush, VT ~6.25hrs (~370 miles 595km)
TR to Cannon, NH ~6.5hrs (~420 miles 676km)
TR to Jay's Peak VT ~7hrs (~450miles 724km)
TR to Wildcat, NH ~7.25hrs (~460 miles 740km)
TR to Sunday River, ME ~7.5hrs (~475miles 764km)
TR to Saddleback, ME ~8.75hrs (~520miles 837km)
A few things I found interesting (from the Toms RIver area):
- Blue Knob is about the same time as some of the southern VT ski areas and Gore, NY.
- Wisp, MD and Whiteface, NY are about the same time as Killington, VT.
- Jay Peak, VT is about the same time as Wildcat, NH
- Sunday River, ME is only 1/2 hour more than Jay Peak, VT
This only considers travel time from the Toms River, NJ area. It says nothing regarding which ski area is a better area or better value than another ski area. Some areas might be worth the extra time and or cost than closer areas.
One can use the above links to determine their own travel times/distances by changing the starting location to suit their needs.
For me, 3-4 hours distance is about my limit for a day trip. Longer travel times (for me) would require a multiple day ski trip.
My question is 2 part
1) Where should I go for overnight/ weekend trips this year?
2) How should I travel when going to Vermont? New york throughway or route 91 and 95 cutting through Conn and Mass. This is the way mapquest ect usually tells me to go, but I seem to always hit trafic in Conn.
about myself I am not a great skier, but love to challenge myself. Have been to Kirkwood, Squaw Heavenly, Vail, Breck, Whistler, J Hole. In the east Poconos, Hunter, Mount Snow, Killington, Sugarbush, MRG, and SUnday river
I love trees, as well as varied terrain.
Sugarloaf, Stowe and Jay Peak are three that I would like to try out. Any ideas?
