What brand/type of hat, beanie, etc' do you wear if you don't wear a helmet?

I'm on the hunt for a new hat and am wondering what people use now and what features I should be looking for. Ok, my gear is antiquated and I've been wearing the same wool hat for years. Time for a change and looking for some recommendations on a great brand / type of hat that would be good for skiing in NE conditions.

I have a MH Dome Perignon that is super warm thermal pro with gore windstopper that I use in NE for everything but skiing (helmet). It is sort of beanie style but more substantial and warmer with ear coverage. For beanies, smartwool makes a nice tight fitting beanie, but I don't think I would ski with it because of wind.

I wear an acrylic Nike watch cap. I found it in a parking lot a few years ago. It's not super warm, but I usually don't need it to be. If my head gets cold, I put up my hood.

I think we need more info before we can help. Height? Weight? What sorts of NE conditions do you prefer to ski? How do you feel about ear flaps? Little balls of yarn at the end of a string? Fake dreadlocks, or triangles that look like the back plates of a stegosaurus? Whatever you do be sure to demo as much as you can before you decide.

Turtle Fur, the hat. Wear two if it's cold.

My own beanie creations, the ultimate way of finding the style you want. Not the warmest at first, but if you throw a fleece lining in there its pretty warm compared to other hats.

I wonder what your objection might be to a helmet. Your said that your equipment is antiquated and this might be a place where an upgrade is most needed. Helmets have come a long way in a short time, lighter weight, vent adjustment and audio upgrades.

I'm 6-1, 225lbs and I'll ski in just about any condition. Mostly groomed trails at this point, but want to experiment a little with some piste. If it keeps me warm ear flaps are fine, but my current wool hat is a typical military style watch cap. Not a big fan of the "Little balls of yarn at the end of a string? Fake dreadlocks, or triangles that look like the back plates of a stegosaurus". If they are there, ok, but would prefer something simpler.

I'm not against a helmet, it's just in 23 years of skiing I've never used one so I wasn't looking to start just yet. Doesn't mean I won't though.

I would not rule a helmet out just because you have not skiied in one before. And I would not think that because you are a good skiier that you do not need one. A helmet will protect you if you fall, but it will also protect you if someone hits you. When you go to try on new lids throw on a helmet as well, you will thank your self later.
