Lets get another dead horse going...

So I'd say it's time to get the "who will be the first in the East to open this year" thread started for 08/09.

With K-mart's new owners, it won't be them. Belleayre has been the first in the past, I don't see that as real likley either.

My guess is Mt. Snow or Stowe.

Yours??

I'll throw in a vote for Stowe too, I don't know why but they always seem to get the biggest early November storms.

Mt Snow, SR or good old Woodbury. Same suspects as last year. I would be very surprised if it was Stowe, their owner AIG hasn't got two nickels they can rub together. Opening first is expensive but it's the PR buzz their going for.

Did I read that Mt Snow already has their pipe in action?

Good thought on Stowe, the current economic condition could put delay opening day at may areas in the East. Although I've heard that Stowe, while owned by AIG isn't even on their corporate radar, they are just too small of a component of the company to care about.

So will less ski areas scale back on their traditional pissing match of blowing lots of expensive snow, just to lose money on reduced rate early season tickets all in the name of being first?

Will the economy mean less Wall Street NYC types on the slopes of VT/NY/NH/ME?

Hmm does this count? Wouldn't that make the first skin/hikeable mountain the first one open as well? Isn't the first turn of the bull wheel the real first "opening"?

Stowe is saying Nov. 24th will be opening day, one week later than 'normal'.

T-park that is owned and operated by a boundry business. I give it to them. Our mountain has opened the beginner area for Instructor Training and of course the herds of beginners we get......are we open? They say we are, I would rather have the park open.

That said....our park is the last thing to open....sad.

Mt Snow hasn't won anything...you need a lift spinning to count. BTW, people up here were earning turns back in September when we got our first snowfall. We only a few here at the Bush, I'm sure Stowe had some, heard there were a bunch up at Jay. Most of the major resorts announced their opening dates before the AIG bailout, only have heard about a few maybe and that's a big maybe, opening a week early, none backing off their dates. Course, it is all weather dependent.

Stowe is definately on their corporate radar, article in BFP about that very thought. By accepting the loan from the US taxpayers they must try to sell as many assets as possible cause they need to raise cash to payback the loan and the 11% interest. Only about 2b so far but they expect to need the entire 80b unless money starts growing on trees.
