Quest. on Sun Valley

Thinking of taking wife to Sun Valley, been there in summer but not in Winter. Need some help.

Is it best to stay in SunValley, Ketchum, Warm springs? Ski in/out would be nice. I have searched Epic and the normal sites on google and get just the "tourist" stuff. Be nice to hear from some Bears that have experienced this. This is my "wifes" vacation and would like to stay somewhere nice. Any recommendations on retaurants etc. would be helpful too. Prefer condo if can afford.

thanks Pete

I really like Sun Valley, but snow can be variable. Since your driving, I would just wait and go at the last minute. I think that there might be a lot of deals this year. Even thought the Sun Valley Lodge is really cool, I would stay in Ketchum.

Not much in the way of ski-in, ski-out. Most condos within walking distance (varying from across the street to a few blocks) are at Warm Springs. That said, I would reccomend Ketchum. Bus service to the mountain is good, or if you want to drive, parking at River Run is good (available and free). Condos also available at the Suyn Valley Resort, which is higher end, with good bus service. Several good restaurants are the Pioneer (steak and seafood, no reservations so there is often a wait), the Sawtooth Club (currently closed due to fire damage, supposed to reopen in December), and the Roosevelt Tavern, all in the center of downtown Ketchum.

It was long ago that I was there, but Sun Valley is one of the few places I would not want to be on the hill. Free bus service to the hill is frequent during ski hours. You want to be able to walk around Ketchum or Sun Valley in the evenings.

Stay at the Lodge, the Inn, or Lodge apartments. The Inn is right next to the Lodge. Recently re-done. Nice and less expensive.

Eat dinner at The Pio, The Ram, The Christie, Il Naso. Breakfast at the Lodge or Rustic Moose.

PM me if you want to talk about anything else.

Why stay in Ketchum? I was there about 10 yrs ago but in the summer and can't really remember the layout.

The Lodge, Inn etc. are they at the ski hill? The restaurants you listed where are they.

If I stay where you recommend do I drive/shuttle to slopes, restaurants. ??

Pete, the main town is Ketchum. The warm springs area is the place to lunch OH loved having quality food and wine while dining outside in the sun. She loved our trip a couple years ago stayed two blocks from the River Run Plaza and walked to the hill. Sawtooth Club serves some great food.

Catch me on the hill I used to ski there regularly and can provide more info should you desire.

Ketchum is at the base of Baldy, the main ski area. Sun Valley is a couple of miles away at the base of Dollar, the original ski area, that is mostly beginner terrain. I just found myself spending most after ski time in Ketchum and all ski time on Baldy. But both are very nice.

Is it better to stay within walking distance of skiing. Take the shuttle or drive over from Ketchum and/or better to stay in Ketchun or by the ski hill. I ordered a trailmap etc. because I am not really clear on this. Are restaurants mentioned above in Ketchum?

Here is a link to the local map. I would prefer Ketchum for proximity to local bars, restarautnts, atmosphere, etc. Most of the restarants mentioned are in or near downtown Kethum.
Other lodging choices are Warm Springs (near hill, several miles from downtown), Sun Valley resort (mile from downtown, several miles from hill but have their own buses), and Elkhorn (several miles from hill and downtown. There are a few places near River Run that are walking distance (depending on definition) from hill and downtown. Resterants mentioned at at or near doswntown.
