car rental in Denver during Christmas

This is the first time my family will be skiing in Colorado during Christmas. Accomodation(winter Park) and air reservations were made three months ago.

Lo and behold, two months before the trip, I found out what it would cost to rent a car in Denver, $883/wk, a compact SUV from Payless, the cheapest I can find.

I checked the same SUV if we were to rent it in SFO or SLC during the same time and they cost $337 and $388, respectively.

Has it always been this way? Where is the competition? And I thought the economy is bad...

Check with ACE rental car. I have one reserved for the week before Christmas in Denver for $290 including tax for the week. That is for a Dodge Durango. I think I found it through Kayak.com. Hertz quoted me $1100!

Wow. I reserved a car from Denver during spring break of next year, which is also a very busy time, and it was very reasonable (SUVs were around what you quoted for SFO and SLC).

CathB,

Thanks for the link. Their price is $406/wk, a fantastic price in comparison. They look like a EU company but the car comes from Alamo.

Wow, thanks again.

KEEP LOOKING !!
I have a mini van with ski rack held with a credit card in Denver starting 12/26/ for less than half of your rental.(hertz)
I have found most of the time it is best to not rent at the Airport.
Some times I rent in stapleton (hotel branches)and turn back in at the airport.
This year I am ariving Union Station, the trick was finding one that will be open new years day.
If I have a late flight I will stay at a hotel that has a rental desk ,use the hotel shuttle to get to my room and then rent first thing in the mourning.
Avis and Hertz has locations in Stapleton ,even if you have to use a taxi the savings can be very good
Good luck
