Cleaning Down Jacket

Thread Starter
Wife just threw a dirty hand me down North Face down jacket with the care label cut out into the washing machine. Not surprisingly, the down is now all bunched up.

What is the best way to dry this to restore the down feathers fluffiness?

You can put it in the dryer on low heat. To fluff it back up toss in a tennis ball. (Sneakers work well too. )

You might need to use some NikWax treatment to restore the waterproofing. If you washed in very cold water you are probably fine. If not, run it again using this:

Yep, I wash my down comforter and pillows this way. Just make sure that the dog hasn't slobbered all over the tennis balls.

The secret: You don't wash down. You wash UP.

Ditto.

Dont really have to use the balls, but they do help.

I'd hold off on the Nix-Wax cause it may screw the down up.

None of my down jackets were ever waterproof so this isn't "word".

From what I can tell from the fine print ..... use mild detergent only or send it out to a professional.

I've always used a mild detergent ... Ivory Snow .... but let the flakes dissolve first of you get "cottage cheese" clumps.

Should you wash your balls with your jacket?

Or, wash your balls separately?

I've washed down many times. just as stated above.......throw a couple tennis balls in the dryer, and you'll be all fluffed and ready for the slopes.

Yuki, depending on the circumstances, you may want to consider how you wash your balls. Perhaps a good reason to never leave the house.
