Local tv news launched the annual “the race is on” story with A-Basin last eve admist a weather report highlighting a high of 85 this week in Denver. And typically they showed the same mid winter file video footage of Loveland’s chair 1 with lifty guy broom swatting snow off the chairs as they turned past the bullwheel.

Ahh what the hell…I'm with you Rossi...that stuff plays well if picked up nationally and it is nice to see activity that marks we’re getting closer to opening day

Loveland was just test firing their guns: http://www.skiloveland.com/snowmaking/.

They'll start blowing soon though!

my wife slipped on some ice on our deck the other morning, but it has been in the 60s during the day here (9 K) and most of the snow has melted off Peak 1

Actually, the post from 9/16 says they test fired their guns. The post from 9/24 says:
"Conditions were perfect for snowmaking last night so we fired up the guns and made snow for the first time this season."

I wonder at what degree they turn on the guns? Don't treat me like an idiot I know water freezes at 32 but what if it is 34 or something along those lines?

That makes me really jealous considering the Pocono guns won't start up for another two months at least!

SkiNebraski, I believe the exact temperature depends on the amount of humidity in the air, but it has to be below freezing for the water to actually turn to snow. FWIW, Howstuffworks.com says 30 degrees minimum, although not explicitly.

Don't worry, we've been getting well below freezing temps at night up here. Its plenty cold to blow. Now we just need A-Basin to crank up. They say they are targeting being the first to open again this year, so they'd better get cracking!

Ahh, Pocono snow= ice chips compressed; a granular-like substance similar to that of sleet....

not true. Can be much higher temp but not ideal.

Yep. Especially here in the southwest. See: psychrometrics and wet bulb temperatures.
