when did vail start getting good snow last year? i have people visiting me here in colorado and they want to go skiing on thanksgiving. the hotels are cheap (probably because the uncertainty).

It didn't start snowing here until about a week into Dec . I think Vail had one manmade run at Thanksgiving last year. We've had some really good conditions at that time in years before so who knows?

Exactly!

This question seems to be very common. There should be a sticky somewhere that says:

1. Snow conditions are hard to predict, vary year to year, week to week and are especially hit or miss early and late season.

2. What happened last year has less relevancy than 20+ year averages. Tony Crocker has some good info at bestsnow.net but remember rule 1.

3. When deciding between different areas, wait to book if possible to see who has the goods.

It depends on what your visitors want and expect. Most years, I've been able to keep beginner and intermediate skier visitors happy at Thanksgiving, as even the WRODs give them a "Colorado Ski" fix. There have been a few years when we've had great conditions (albeit on limited terrain) at Thanksgiving, but very few. Loveland, Keystone, and perhaps Arapahoe Basin and Breckenridge are better bets than Vail that time of year.

As long as it's a weekend, school holiday, at the Basin, Stone, Vail or BC chances are near 100%.

Thank you and just to make it clear I m not expecting anyone to know how it is going to be . I mean I live in colorado so I know how unpredictable weather is around here. I just don't remember how it has been there the last few years and I guess I was just trying to figure out if history was on my side.

Last year I had a local tell me Vail was decent by Thanksgiving about 30% of the time. They had nothing at Thanksgiving in '07, but '06 was pretty good.
