Gas On A Fire- Resort Rankings from Freeskier

Just to pour a little gas on the 'resort Ranking by Magazines' fire... anyone see the new Freeskier Travel Guide?

Top Resorts:

1. Whistler/ Blackcomb
2. Aspen/ Snowmass
3. Mammoth
4. Breck/ Keystone
5. Vail
6. Jackson Hole
7. Squaw
8. Park city
9. Telluride
10. Alta/ 'bird

Ok, not bad. What does the East look like?

1. Mountain Creek
2. Killington
3. Loon
4. Mount Snow
5. Stratton
6. Stowe
7. Sunday River
8. Jay Peak
9. Tuckerman Ravine

there is no '10'. uhhmmm... WTF? I'd be pissed if I was Sugarbush or Sugarloaf or Okemo or... Tuckerman Ravine? A ski area? Really?

Discuss.

If I'm Freeskier magazine, I don't even acknowlege that Mountain Creek exists.

I'm guessing Mt Cranmore is #10 in the East....Sugarbush or Sugarloaf couldn't possibly measure up to it.

The Rivah over the 'Loaf?!

silly jibbers.

Where is Mountain Creek? Seriously, I've never heard of it.

Exactly my thoughts.

The good news is Maine now has 2 premier mountains for skiing.....

Of course Sugarloaf being #1 and now we have an expanded and improved Saddleback!!!

If Sunday River didn't exist I wouldn't miss it. IMO, SR sucks.

I'd be curious what their rankings are based on. That seems to be a lot closer to my personal favorites compared to what Ski Magazine puts out. Then again, I tend to care more about the hill than whether there's 5 star dining or hottubs in every condo building.

Now, aren't we all supposed to complain about somewhere 'obviously' missing from the list?

Crested Butte obviously should have made the list. It should have the proper (dive bar+patchouli) / steepness quotient to propel it into Freeskier's list.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Jersey. For real... Jersey.

And that right there tells you everything you need to know about the quality of this list (at least on the east coast side).

A place in Jersey, best in the east? The mind boggles.

Edit: Looking at their trail map (pdf) they have an entire "peak" devoted to park. Guess that tells you what this list is based on.

Freeskier is still being published? Who would have thought? Did you get your free keep-by-the-john copy at work?

Yes.

Freeskier Magazine owes me a new monitor.

Where's Blue

Stowe 6th and Jay 8th, what a joke. Tucks on a resort list? I guess they ran out of areas.

I am a resort jong only having skied at Mammoth, Vail, Park City. That said, I always imagined ALTA/Snowbird to be the spot for Ut. I thought Park City was fun, but not real mountains like Mammoth.
No Deer Valley? What were they thinking????
Not much for Parks, but the guy from loon designs SR SL and Loon's parks know. I like the River.
Just like on i-Tunes, I tend to not agree with what others think is the best.

Best evidence yet that Freeskier mag staff enjoys hallucenogenics and whip-its while at work. No #10, no MRG, 'Loaf and no 'Bush when a friggin Jersey Mt is #1? And if this mag is leaning on accomodations, what the hell is Tuck's doing on there??? Someone needs to stop smoking meth while making resort reviews. I think there must have been a typo- Butternut was obviously #10.

If Yawgoo Valley plays their cards right, maybe they can make next year's list!
East Coast Top ten:

1:jay
2:Stowe (tie)
3:Sugarbush(tie)
4:MRG
5:Whiteface

Ok this part honestly doesn't matter (well except that Jay is at the top of course), lets jump down the list a bit

185:Mt. Creek NJ

I would rank Four Seasons in Fayettville NY (supposedly the smallest in the world) above Mt. Creek. Unfortunately 4 Seasons's website has no real stats to convey how small it is, but its tiny.

I've never been to Mt. creek so I may be way off base, but it's in the dirty jerz. Thats strike one and everything I've heard is just scary

Read the list backward and it's close to being right.

Backwards looks better to me.
I was going to ask where and what Mountain Creek is... then I read that it's in Jersey?!? And that's the number 1 mountain in the east?!? Lemme guess... is Freeskier world headquarters also located in the fine, mountainous state of New Jersey?
So, Stratton is above Stowe, and there is actually a NH area above MRG?
Uh, a bigger argument might be that Loon is number 3! Loon's snow quality aside from the terrain park is awful. They're trying to put a new glade in on the South Peak terrain...good luck with that one. Not to mention the ridiculous ticket prices compared to those of much better mountains like Jay and MRG. While I'm in that topic, why are Jay and Tucks even considered for RESORT rankings?? If anything, Freeskier should sack up and actually give the East two different categories. Something like mountains for park and mountains for actual good skiing.

Loon over Sunday and Jay? I think not

Why would you consider Jay and Tuck's similar?

Jay Peak has: Snow making, Grooming equipment, Condos, a Hotel, a Golf course, oh... and LIFTS. Seems like a 'resort' to me.

Tucks has: uhmmm, let see... I'm not coming up with anything. Cool 'Hike To' terrain in the spring? Gulf of Slides is better if that's the criteria.
Tuck's has a HoJo's (BYOB) trailside at the split to Hillman's and The Ravine and some lean-to shelters. To the morons at Freeskier that's probably enough infrastructure to qualify it.
