EpicSki Server Transfer - Blackout

Thread Starter
We are going to be switching servers on Saturday AM September 20. I wanted you to know because the site will be down for up to 48 hours. Most will be back on in about 12 but a few DNS servers in remote locals will take a while to reset.

This is in anticipation of the membership roll out and the Epic Mall- which is filling up with some incredible discounts for subscribing members!! I am really surprised at the significant discounts that some of these guys are throwing out there.

So lets hear your suggestions on dealing with the addiction during the blackout, and once the site is back online, it should have lots of exciting new features and faster speeds.

I'm pretty sure I can kill that bug Jiimmy left in my signature by the time we are back online....

You should have done this in the winter so some people can actually go skiing for one day

A suggestsion; put a page up at the old IP address giving the new IP address and an explanation. One should be able to get to the new server immediately by using the IP address.

For example:

"epicski.com has been moved to a new server. until the Domain name epicski.com has been updated and works for you - you can access the new location by typing 192.168.1.128 into the address bar in your browser."

or even...."by clicking here http://192.168.1.128"

dchan, could you put a redirect page at the old IP adresss that automatically redirects visitors to the new IP?

I think I'll engage in one of my favorite pastimes, which I've neglected due to the outstandingly intriguing content I find at epicski, I will be killing spiders with a hammer.

Time to rearrange the sock drawer, I have been neglecting that for a while.

SkiMangoJazz, the reason the site will be down for so long is because of the actual database move and other configuration options, not the DNS. I will be providing access to the site through an alternate domain name for those whose DNS hasn't caught up with our changes, after the move has been successfully tested on the new server.

My dry run on the server move earlier this week was successful, so I am not anticipating big problems, but is better to give a good size window to allow for any unforeseen problems.

aha, I understand. thanks - and good luck with the transfer!

How bout we all go to TGR and open multiple threads in every category saying "anyone having trouble logging in to Epic"?

That would be funny, and would certainly precipitate vengeful shenanigans once epic came back up.

This could interfere with the selling of Finn's goats...

The database is 1.7G compressed as an sql dump its about 1.5G This data has to be dumped then transfered and restored at the new location.

What's up tonight ? You guys busy with something here ? Changes abound. Color has changed to a new option or style .
I don't see ANY ads. But the "useful" part of the forum had shrunk to about 1/3 of the total window, squeezed to the lower left corner... The top and right side are blank, probably the space where the ads are supposed to be? Annoying little quirk.

Oh well, time to go to bed so I can go out for a bike ride first thing in the morning. So no epicski isn't the end of the world either.

I'll be filling the void with cheese and beer.

dcneiner was working on some setting to resolve the weird stuff people noted in Internet Exploder, like overlapped screens, font dialogues off the page and so forth. That's the problem when you play with templates on the fly.

I am currently using the new server which is not completely loaded, thanks to a preview by dcneiner.

dcneiner tells me its 160 times faster than what we were using. From what I see here, he is right. Man, this is blazing fast. Most of you will automatically transfer here in the next 24 hours. The site will be offline starting at 8:30 AM EDT and will be down at least 6-hours. So about the time I roll out of bed on the West Coast, all should be good

I'm going to go and put some lips stick on a pig, watch Wall Street crumble and investment bankers run off with my stock portfolio, steal 30% of the equity of my house and listen to the Republicans whine about the nanny state as they raise my taxes to pay for their mistakes.

Oops, this isn't the Lounge, is it?
Why did you have to pick the only Saturday before ski season when Oklahoma isn't playing? If it wasn't for the CenterFest party downtown I'd need therapy or something.

Wrong forum.

But equally wrong whine. The equity of your house was inflated 30% over the last few years for no good reason. Now, it's just coming back down to reality. What it really should have been.

Though if you had bought at that inflated price. Then it's very, very real. And very, very sad. You would have my sympathy in that case.

Sorry at nyc, I live in Pittsburgh where home prices never went nutty but my equity dropped any ways.

It was funny when a few months ago TGR went down and they started a "wtf happened to TGR" thread here. We could do the same, but then you'd have to take all the yapping and name calling there.
