What would it cost you not to ski?

Most pro athletes cannot ski due to contracts...what would it cost for you to give up skiing?

Bringing World Cup caliber ski equipment and service to all skiers - from pro ski racers to everyday all mountain skiers and into the...

A fair amount of money and labor spent on ski gear.. Probably a couple teeth and lots ot stitches cause I'l probably take up hockey to fill the winter actrivity void.. Maybe add about 40 pounds otherwise.

Thats a difficult question. I think I need more specifics. Like for a year, forever, for a month etc.
If I'm reading the question right, it's not "what would you lose if you stopped skiing?" but "how much would you have to be paid to give up skiing?"

Are we talking per year? Or forever? (since athletes are only bound for as long as they're under contract...)

A few million a year?

Actually, a lot less than that. A friend of mine is an astronaut. Nothing in her contract say she CAN'T ski. But it's "suggested" they don't ski within 12 months of scheduled flight. So she doesn't. The job is worth it for her. Probably would be for me too, if I'm so lucky to be scheduled to fly into space!

Her husband, of course, disagrees. So he takes the kid skiing while she waits in the lodge. But he doesn't complain when, upon her successful completion of mission, the whole family got invited to the White House and dine with whoever it was the president. Not once, not twice, three times so far.

Since Astronaut's career is often longer than that of pro athlets, the sacrefies is for longer.

+1 on the sanity count. In addition to being more fun than I can adequately express with words, skiing is the best stress reliever I've ever found.

Even if offered enough money to live like a king for the rest of my life, I'd almost certainly not give up skiing. For one thing - what would I spend my money on if I can't use it to travel around the world making turns? But more importantly, I'd need a replacement for all the joy and relaxation it brings to me.

I could probably be persuaded to cut back on the number of days per year in exchange for a nice chunk of change (which in turn would make each of the days I got heli-ski days), but never cut it out for good.

My wife has told me it doesn't matter what it costs we are paying it (at least for season passes). She says I'm a grumpy ass if I don't get my skiing in every couple days. Now if she could just understand how happy new gear makes me.

If I were a pro athlete on that scale of a contract, I could easily give up skiing for the duration of that contract.

I'd probably do lots of drugs though... just for entertainment value. Other drugs would then hide that I did the previous drugs. Wait... isn't that what they already do?

For me, it took the birth of my son. I burned all my vacation time staying home to spend time with my wife and son. If I had lived right next to a mountain, I probably could have gotten in some runs, but I don't. I'll be getting back into skiing this year, and I'm looking forward to it. But I have absolutely no regrets in choosing to spend time with my family vs. time skiing.

My career. I met the guy who'd be my future boss on a chairlift one cold December day.

Oh, just my mental health and sense of self worth. No biggie.

That's it?

That's all it takes to break you?

I'm betting your opinion would change if I handed you 10grand to spend a winter in Fiji learning how to surf while housed in a hut.

Yeah, I'd wager that.

(nor do I think you would actually disagree with me.)

Lotto winning pro-athlete space flight considerations are certainly fun what ifs with this question. However, I'm thinking that if those who count on me most suddenly anguish about my skiing then I must carefully evaluate my personal pleasure derived from skiing against those responsibilities I hold as an adult, parent and provider. While I consider skiing an important component in my life it is not my life's measure as those who I influence and provide for certainly are. So while I’m fortunate to have now a harmony with all including the time spent on this silly forum, the cost of losing that harmony would not be paid and I could easily ignore this snowy sport.

None of this makes sense to me.

If I am getting paid I can easily give up skiing...think about it, no matter how much you love to ski, unless skiing is the ONLY THING that brings you joy in the world, then you can use the money to do whatever else you enjoy. AND dont forget that with more money comes more opportunities. Things that you might not do now, perhaps with more cash you would. I could see myself getting into so many other sports if skiing were banned. Top of my list would be car racing, with professional instruction, crew, a fleet of race cars, transporter, and the $$$ to travel all over the world to make it happen.

It would cost a lot of money. When my wife and I can't do work to the outside of the hosue, we work on the inside. We've already justified skiing at least once a week as a cheaper alternative. "$50 in gas is way cheaper than redoing the bathroom!"

If you paid me enough I'd stop skiing.

Then I'd take up snowboarding....

it would need to be a lot of cash btw

My life is wonderful right now. I love where I am and can't think of any reason that I would want to change it. I'm happy and I'll try to stay that way as long as possible. Skiing is a big piece of that happiness, so no deal here no matter what you're offering.

Too bad Posaune, I was ready to send you a $3 million contract to give up skiing indefinitely. Oh well.

Ok, gimme ten grand and we'll see! (It might get blown in Alaska, tho...)

Posaune's pretty much got the whole contentment equation nailed down, tho- I like my life and don't want to change it. Skiing included.

It helps to have another passion. I love riding bikes, so if I was paid to stop skiing over the winter, I would blow the money on some cool bike and a lot of riding in places that I will probably never see (such as Fruita, for example). So yeah, I can be easily bought out.

Yo, Phil, what is this thread about anyway?

You moving to Florida and tallying up greens fees for Nov-Apr?

No, man. No thanks. Keep it for yourself and buy a new set of wheels for your BIG ride. I don't need it.

so much, I can't really name the price. more than a few million dollars and the thought of skiing professionally erased from my brain so I would never know that I was really into it.
