Ski Graphics - How Much Influence?

Thread Starter
Many have commented on the latest crop of ski graphics - some adored and some hated.

How much weight do you apply to ski graphics when buying new skis?

I figure I'm at about 20%. I'll never buy skis due to graphics, but will reject a brand if I dislike the look. To me, it's like buying a car.

The scratchy, chaotic stuff doesn't work for me. Yet, staid, predictable designs (much of K2's stuff) strike me as boring.

How much does top-sheet art influence your purchase decision?

Zero

If I don't like 'em..... or if I'm bored..., I'll vote for change.

Graphics won't sell a ski, but they will stop a sale.
Non. I only care about what I can make the skis do, not what they look like.

I suppose if it was really awful, I would spray paint over it.

How much? Probably too much, but how many folks would want a Ferrari if they were purple instead of RED?

If anybody doesn't want their purple Ferrari, send it my way; I'll be glad to drive it.

How big is the discount? I'll drive a purple Ferrari, no doubt

I AGREE GRAPHICS CAN STOP A SALE. If I were K2 Id offer two graphics on the Hellbent. I know many a skier who would love this ski but will never even consider it. I think they are afraid they might burn in hell for even being seen with the ski

Sometimes the ugly child is a prodigy, and often a better deal. I don't look at them while I'm skiing anyway.
If I had two skis rated very close, the graphics could sway me.

I agree that graphics can definitely stop a sale. Take a look at the Rossi 07/08 Scratch Steeze--it's supposed to be an excellent ski, but I would/will have a very hard time purchasing it due to the candy pink bubble gum look. Same goes for the "not limited" version of the 07/08 Dynastar Troublemaker.

As an "adult" with a family, I get looks from other parents when I get on the lift with my 06/07 Public Enemys with the violent graphics. I bought them, and I think the PE's are excellent skis, but I'm not sure I would purchase them again. Their replacement, the K2 Extreme, while it lacks the violent graphics, is IMHO ugly.

I don't think it's all that hard to make skis that are attractive enough that the looks won't prevent a sale. Line chases the "young" ski crowd, but I don't think anyone would have a problem with the graphics on their boards. Not sure why other mfgers can't do the same.

Yesterday, I had a woman pick a ski/boot combo out, spent $300 more for a lesser combo because of graphics.

A can of black spray paint goes for $2.49 at Canadian Tire. I'm sure you can find something just as cheap where you are.

I feel ya, I bought CaBrawlers this summer cause they were like $100 bucks new but they have some subtle (?) East Coast gang overtones in the graffics, red hats, fists in the air, red Statue of Liberty. Maybe it was or wasn't the intent, not sure I care that much unless someone says they think they are offensive.

Maybe I should paint the red hats and Statue of Liberty on the left ski blue so left ski is West Coast and right ski is East Coast

Maybe some smileys or KLOVE Christian music stickers would tone them down

Nowadays none. I buy Head and thats all there is to it. That being said, even knowing that the former XRC skis are the exact same ski as the new SS Speed, I chose the Speeds for more money simply because I hate the look of the XRC.

Regardless of the top sheet graphics, I entirely agree with your decision to fork over $100 for a pair of dedicated mogul skis (I think the're even wood core). Nice purchase.

Perhaps a mix of peace signs and smiley face stickers would take care of the PEs.

Ghost:

Not a bad idea if I can make the paint job look half decent. While I am willing to patch cuts in my ski pants with duct tape, I'm not a good enough skier to pull off the full-bore ghetto look.

Psychotic graphics definitely keep me from buying certain skis. Also, wishing to remain happily married, you won't see me on a Head J.O. Pro.

Funny, I almost bought my husband the Head JO Pro. I think it would encourage him to ski with me more

Graphix won't make a sale for me, but they can turn me off if they are really insulting.

Oddly enough, I get caught up in the chit chat about a ski, as well as the technical features long before I know what it looks like.

I HATE cartoony graphics- Keep the Nickolodean (sp?) guys out of the design studio, I wouldn't have something on my feet that would suggest I just finished watching Eureka's Castle or something... Moment is like this for the most part-- neon, random shapes and otherwise 80s-tastic and pre-pubescent artwork.

I like the simple or the badass graphics. PM Gear's trees, Movement's fire, and Icelantic's art are all good examples of artistic and inspiring designs that don't look overly juvenile. Also Igneous' simplicity is very attractive as well...

Overall, I'd say the right topsheet can turn a ski I want into a ski I lust for, but the wrong topsheet can make me not give a damn how awesome it is. I would never buy solely on topsheet, tho- that's freakin rediculous. I could see it now, tho- "I don't know what kinda ski it is, but it looks real purdy!"

I love the 'ugly' skis cuz there are usually plenty of left overs and they are cheaper! The funny thing is I usually get curiosity comments about them and they start conversations on the lift. They usually aren't ugly though just not the current trend.

I do the same thing with jackets. Usually that ugly orange or whatever jacket becomes cool the next season. I guess I am behind AND ahead of the trends at the same time LOL.

When I was working on graphics, my one word that I wanted to keep in mind was "timeless". This years crop of Vist really struck that cord best.

I painted my PE's. Hated the urban warfare graphics, but wanted the ski -- so I decided before I bought them that I'd paint em. Paint chips off, they look like sh-t but I figure that keeps them from attracting sticky fingers.

I'll repaint them after next season...or maye sooner. Might go plain black this time.

Here's the thread where you can see what they looked like when I originally painted them. I have no pics of them now. They're pretty beat up looking, but I knew that would happen
