The 2009 Epic Ski Gathering - Page 5

Looks like I'll be doing a lot of JH in February. There's the gathering, and then a bunch of PSIA days later in the month (near the end, in fact). Bought my air ticket last night and am now mucking about renting car, booking my PSIA clinics and other such things.

Must be getting close -- the remaining balance (after the deposit at time of booking) just got charged to my credit card last night

Finding maps and cheap tickets: exasperating.

Arranging rental car and lodging: ridiculous.

Recognizing other Bears (even ones you know) wearing ski clothing: Impossible.

I agree 100% with Bonni.

Every year I make the same comment - make yourselves recognizable. Every year people go and never meet up with any Bears. Such a shame.

Stickers are a good idea, but require some organisation before hand, like ordering and waiting for delivery. Unles someone buys a batch and on-sells them on the first day.

As well, I suggest you do something like tie a bandana around your arm, or off the top of your ski pole if you prefer. This is easily recognisable at a distance, even from the chair, or in the queues.

It is impossble to find the group otherwise. Even if you know people, helmets and gogles are a great disguise. There are always two rounds of introductions, with gear on and gear of. And there are alway some who trick us by wearing a different jacket each day.

Go buy a bandana today, and use it !

Julie is spot-on. We need to have some kind of sign to ID other Gathering people. I remember arriving at Snowbasin in 06, and me and Mr Crab were wandering around in puzzlement, acosting innocent skiiers and demanding to know if they were Bears.

It was quite difficult.

Can we agree on some kind of ID? Bandannas on upper arms sounds good to me.

When I ran the Let's Go Colorado series I solved this problem with the creation of "Mogul".

Now that I took the reigns on the national gathering all you have to do is look for "Mogul". He/she/it never leaves my side. The banner is about 16" X 24" inches and I'll post it at the meeting spots in easy view.

Find Mogul.....you've found us

Sometimes more embarrassing...skiing with someone all day and then not recognizing them outside of their gear.

You're the short one with the glowing eyeball and spinning helmet, right?

I'm the tall dorky looking guy who looks amazingly similar with or without gear

But if you watch me ski, my particular brand of flailing around will be hard to forget

Appetizers and Drinks on Feb 9

Hi, all you JH Gathering participants.

My real estate partner and I would like to host a little drinks-and-appetizers thing at our office in town early on the evening of Monday, February 9. This would be the evening after the first "official" day of skiing at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort at Teton Village.

Our office is in town, directly across the street from the entrance to the Silver Dollar Bar in the Wort Hotel on Broadway. We're a half-block away from the town square and the Cowboy Bar. Since most of you seem to be staying in town, I thought this would be a pretty convenient spot to gather before everyone goes out to dinner.

We'll provide some snacks of some sort as well as the wine and beer (if you want hard stuff, you'll have to bring it yourself). Let's plan on starting at 6:00pm so that any of you who want to stop at the Mangy Moose after your ski day will have that opportunity.

We've got a pretty big flat-screen tv in the office, so if any of you take movies (or photos) of your ski day, we can put them up on the screen.

I'll post a couple of photos of the location and the specific directions in the next few days.

Also, I don't think anyone has mentioned anything about a group dinner. That's been traditionally held the last official evening of the Gathering. Is there any interest among the group in putting something like that together?

Oh, by the way... another 12" of snow last night and it's snowing hard this morning. I'm pretty sure we'll have passed 250" total snowfall for the season by the time you read this message.

Bob, that is very generous and a great idea. It will be nice to meet after skiing. I'm excited to come back to JH.

Bumpfreak, I like your helmet. Artistic skis and helmet. One of a kind.
Looking forward to skiing with you.

Wow, Bob, VERY generous. I'm looking forward to it.

And a good idea to start organizing an event closing group dinner now. Attempts to organize the whole group while we're there can be difficult. Anyone have suggestions where we should go? I think I've only eaten in town once, several years ago at Nikai, which I remember being good, but I know not everyone is into japanese/sushi.

Bob, Excellent idea on the get together on the 9th.

I think a group dinner is a good idea. Personally though, I have a problem with it being the last night. I have to head right out of town to SLC to pick SugarCube up for Part 2 (Utah Adventure)

How about Tuesday night for those that have to head out at the end of the ski day?
Tuesday night is a good idea...I'm sure there are others who will need to head out Wednesday.
Outstanding idea Bob and thanks for your always generous hospitality.

I'm good with dinner on any night, but agree there may be several that might not be around for Wed night.
That sounds awesome Bob! I'll definitely plan on it

Count me in for a group dinner as well.

Thanks Gary, I'm looking forward to it too
post #143 of 305
Hi, all.

Tuesday is fine with me for the group dinner. I understand how people might want to take off after skiing on Wednesday.

As for a restaurant, I don't think the sushi place is really very well set up for a big group.

If nobody objects, I'm going to ask the Snake River Brewpub if they could accomodate a large group. The brew pub is an award-winning brewery with lots of choices on good food and pizza. They're in town, just a couple blocks from the town square.

I'll check to see how they feel about a group.
That sounds like a great option for a group. Thanks for doing the legwork Bob.

Hey, this sounds great! er, is this in the town of Jackson? Or Teton Village?

I have to drive back to PC the day after the Gathering, so the dinner a day back is a better idea, and a brewpub with PIZZA is an even better idea!

The village skied beautifully yesterday. We got 12 on top of 18 in the last 72 hours. Light and blower over the entire mountain.

Get ready guys the mountain is skiing just...

GREAT!!!

Aw come on.....last year we were getting 20" a day for all the days of The Gathering. Start cloud seeding, we (the masses) expect nothing less this year

Bob,

Thanks very much for your efforts in advance of The Gathering.

The dinner plan sounds excellent!

I am getting very motivated about this trip. Sitting here with the fan going, it's so hot tonight, going to be 100 on the US scale tomorrow. I've never seen JH and it's one place I always wanted to see. The Gathering is going to be a heap of fun.
