Summit County trip - cheap place to stay?

Thread Starter
In addition to my usual week long trip out west (I'm coming from NYC) me and two other friends are going to do a long weekend trip to Colorado and want to stay somewhere in Summit County.

As we're doing two big trips, we are trying to keep this Colorado trip as cheap as possible and I was thinking that staying somewhere in Frisco or Dillon would offer cheap lodging.

Anyone have any recommendations of a cheap place to stay in Frisco/Dillon, or some other place?

We're all in our mid 20s and no females are coming with so we have no problem staying in a budget hotel.

Thanks!

Try the Super 8 in Georgetown
Only a few minutes from frisco/Dillon

About $30.00/night per bunkbed.

In Silverthorne right across from the Rec Center. On the free bus system too.

Luxury Inn and suites Silverthorne.

Pretty basic but clean with a free continental breakfast and high speed internet. Walking distance to a couple of cheap restaurants. Should be right up your alley.

I haven't lived here that long, but am thinknig that Georgetown can be much longer than a few minutes, especially if it snows.

The others suggestions sound pretty reasonable based on what you are looking for. A bit nicer might be the Frisco Lodge or Frisco Hotel, both on Main St. and a few blocks from the bus. I think one of the Bears who visited recently stayed at the Fireside in Breck and I thought he mentioned it was a hostel (but maybe he said hotel with a southern accent). Probably more nightlife in Breck if you can swing it...

Last year for a decent room at a decent price, the luxury was the best choice. We'll see what this year brings. I notice it was not the case the year before. If you're willing to slum it, this is cheaper.

For just a bunk, daysailers link is the best.

There is the Wayside out by the golf course in breck, but last year their mid season prices did not justify the drop in room quality. Luxury Inn was just modestly more. End of season they drop significantly, and become the best deal in the area.

The Wayside Inn sold, is shutting down, and liquidating furnishings. Destined to be torn down and replaced by condos we were told.

Georgetown is around 30 minutes from the Dillon/Silverthorne exit (assuming good conditions) and from there you are still 15-20 minutes away from skiing. It is a good location to stay if you are going to ski Loveland, but its pretty far away (and on the wrong side of the tunnel) for skiing Summit County.

Snowshoe Motel Frisco

Step out the door, and you're at the free Summit Stage Bus to Copper or Breckenridge

Fireside Inn

Best kept secret in Breckenridge! Choose either the B&B or the ski dorm.

I agree about Georgetown. Unless you plan to ski Loveland, which might not be a bad idea for a cheap trip, you'll have to deal with traffic through the tunnel. It can be a 5-10 minute ride, but not during ski season.

There is a Super 8 in Dillon, which is near the free bus, and also across the street from Virgin Island Ski rentals, which is one of the best priced gear rental places in the area.

Hi Kevin M. I just returned from summit county and stayed at the Fireside Inn located just off Main Street in downtown Breckenridge. Cost during the ski season is $30. a night per person. It is indeed a Hostel as MEfree stated.Great place to stay. Super owners. Another suggestion for Frisco/Dillon/Silverthorn is to check out Hotwire.com. They list local hotels at a discount to published rates. Good luck hunting and enjoy your ski vacation.

So glad you liked Nikki, Andy and Robin! They work with us at Breckenridge Heritage Alliance
How did you like the two standard poodles?

The Fireside is two blocks uphill from Main. I believe that the Breck Freeride Bus stops there in ski season, and goes right to the gondola. Otherwise, it's about a five minute walk.

Have they done much/any interior renovation? I assume ownership changed. The old owner was real cool but I found the Alpen Hutte to be on the dank and dirty side.

I'll second the Snowshoe aka Sno ho in Frisco. Much better setting than the Luxury Inn.

I gotta check out the Fireside

I should also have mentioned that our neighbors here in Frisco run http://www.vacationtimelodging.com/

Not sure of their price range, but you can check it out for yourself online.

Yo Bump,

Click on the link and check out the renovation. It's hard to recognize the old place. Eric sold it but I haven't had time to stay there. Besides, I can now access Employee Housing at Copper for $40.00/night. The Edge can be pretty wierd though - females should be prepared for many lame pickup lines.

Yes Lisamarie I really enjoyed my stay at the Fireside Inn. The poodles are fun members of their family. This was my third time staying there, having stayed and skied last Thanksgiving. The free bus stops right in front and drops off at Beaver Run Lift 5 minutes later.Just off main street it is so easy to walk to all the local shops, resturants, bars and nightclubs.Hostels are not very well known by USA citizens but are very popular everywhere else. An interesting place to stay because evenings at tea time are shared chatting with travelers from all points of the planet.Thanks.

^^^Oh, very nice. I had clicked on it before but wasn't patient enough to see the interior pics. Looks like some good improvements. I will refrain from my usual characterization of the place until I stay there again.

Thanks for the info

My friend who is going with me found a 1 bedroom condo place in silverthorne for $80/night. Has full kitchen, living room, access to pool/hot tub.

Listed on vrbo.com. We've had incredible luck finding places on that website for SUBSTANTIALLY less than places that are commercially advertised.

Great suggestions!

We'll use these.

If you stay at the Fireside, be sure to go one block up the hill to Wellington and North Harris, and check out the Father Dyer Church. Dyer went from town to town on his skis, delivering the mail, along with the word of God. The stain glass windows show pictures of him on skis.

Walk on Harris towards Lincoln, and you'll see a house that is being renovated. This was the home of Eli Fletcher, who was one of the ski top ski makers of the area in the 1880s. (skis were a form of transport at the time)

Sorry to ramble about stuff that is not really related to actual skiing. This is one of the hazards of being a guide for the historic society, at the height of preparations for the Breck 150.

This might sound like a dumb question but is it illegal for me to go up and rent a single room and have 2 or 3 friends stay with me?

That is true. Talking with the owner it appears the purchasers are planning to use it for some sort of "employee" housing this winter-I did not ask who is buying the place. Then next spring raze it and begin developing the condos.
