Rooftop carrier

My girlfriend bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee this year so that is going to be our vehicle for ski trips. I want a hard cover rooftop carrier that locks. I am not looking to spend an arm and a leg but I don't want something that will fall apart or leak after 1 season either. Any suggestions? Anyone have one of these?

Check out Inno's at Costco, they have a nice lo-profile one.

I've got a yakima skybox, and really like it, but there are a couple of things to consider.

Cost: They're not cheap. If you can find a used one in good condition, that's going to be your only chance at getting one without spending at least a couple hundred dollars.

Size: Make sure the one you buy can hold your longest (or your friend's longest) pair of skis, and still allow the rear lift gate on the cherokee to open all the way. Otherwise, it's just going to annoy you, or be worthless (if it won't hold your skis)

It's really handy for other stuff too, 'cause it significantly increases your cargo space, especially if you want to go somewhere for the weekend with four people in the car.

Ever think about renting one?

The thing I have been most concerned about is the length because I have 174s. I did not think about clearance for the back lift gate, thanks for pointing that out!! Her Cherokee is nice but I was surprised that it was not that long. My 2 door Honda Accord is longer from bumper to bumper so the lift gate is going to be an issue. I know I am going to spend several hundred dollars but I just want to get value for what I pay, not just a brand name or a shiny carrier that sucks.

I looked at the Inno on the Costco website. It looks really nice but does the slide-out tray come out if I am using it for something other than skis? If it doesn't come out is there still enough room to store other stuff?

Not sure about the tray. I saw them at SIA and was impressed with the quality. Do you need to fit it in your garage? Height might be an issue.

Will take it off before the jeep goes in the garage. I like the Inno but will never need to carry 8 skis or boards. I will probably be looking for something a little smaller.

174's should fit no problem. I have the yakima skybox 16, which is their smallest box they currently sell that you could actually get any skis in (81" overall length). I can fit my 186 watea 94's in easily, on a slight diagonal, and I can fit my old 191 Bandit X's in if I split them and put them both bases down. It's a tight fit, but the longer box hits the liftgate on my outback, so I decided to go this route.

If you're looking for something smaller, the yakima spacebooster 11 is narrower and shorter (height) than the skyboxes, and at 89" should fit any skis you want to put in there.

The INNO website says:
Quote:
Carries up to 5 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards with room for boots and gear when using the slide tray
Trays are removable for greater capacity
