Hard to pick just one....
I really think the dumbest thing I've done on skis occured when I was maybe 15 or 16.
I grew in Northeast Pennsylvania and this is (er was) coal mining country. The remains of this era can be seen everywhere in hulking rusted out vestiges of a historic coal breakers, abandoned mining facilities, and the HUGE black piles or 'mountains' of leftover mine tailings or 'culm banks' that were spread out over the region.
Behind the house where I grew up, was a large swath of forested land and a maybe a 20 minute dirtbike ride away were some of the largest culm banks in my area.
Here's a random pic of a culm bank for those who don't know what they are. Kinda looks like fluted spines of an Alaskan peak no?
For some reason one summer, me and some friends decided to ski them....
We got some old ski equipment from the local shop, strapped them to a buddy's dirtbike (kinda like snowmo access skiing
) and were off to the shred the culm banks.
It was a HOT summer day (i.e. 90 degrees+ with 70 - 80% humidity uhhhh), so we were wearing shorts. In my case...soccer shorts....because I had to head to HS soccer practice later that afternoon.
So I dropped in for my first run on a mellow slope just to see how well you could 'slide' on this stuff. And it was surprisingly...easy. You had to kind of jump to turn, but you could get sliding a bit on the rocky / dusty surface. It was actually pretty fun.
So first run warm up out of the way it was time to hit the steeps.
After a dirtbike tow back up to the top we immediately headed to a one of the steeper sketchier lines. Bad idea. I made two 'turn's on the the fluted spine and set off a rock-a-lanche of dust and hot sunbaked black coals that swept me off my feet and I went down hard. Remember I was wearing soccer shorts....so picture sliding into home base with shorts that would slide up when you slid....now picture me sliding down a steep coal bank with the same shorts. My left hip got shhhhrreeedddded by the coals. My entire leg was black from the coal dust but was ooooozing blood and puss.
It was gnarly....when I got back home my friends had to hold me down and I bit into a towel as they took a garden hose to my leg to try and wash out the mine tailings, coal dust, and black rocks from my leg. To this day I've never felt such pain!
15 or 16 years later...I still have a few black line scars on my hip from this.
(First runner-up for dumbest things I've done on skis would probably be mounting race stock bindings to 240cm speed skis and freeskiing for a day on them and second runner-up would probably be hitting Hospital Air).
