Ok this is just a review of the construction and appearance of these skis that I find are unique to anything else I have or have seen. Having owned the 07-08 model (for 5 days, not skied) I can tell you what is different at least from an appearance perspective.
The ends have large chunks of aluminum distancing the FRP laminations from potential harms way...a good design feature considering my last pair was delaminating simply from Fedex handling. The result is an attractive high tech look that should make these skis quite durable. Head must have had some issues with the tips on these skis because this year they really covered their bases (no pun intended). The top sheet is now red and black as opposed to last year’s orange, with what appears to be Aztec graphicsalso similar to last year, and looks great, it is also coated with their durable anti-scuff top. The Intelligence, HEAD, and Liquid Metal logos are all actual metal bonded to the top of the skis in fitted recesses, giving the skis a more high-end appearance. As is advertised, these skis are built similar to race skis, with a sandwich construction and plastic sidewalls. On the underside you'll find the same UHM bases that they use in the race skis, but without as much structuring, and it is split with about 1/3 of the front end being white with a Head Monster logo and some graphics.
The skis as you can see are flat, and need to be drilled for bindings. According to the people who I spoke to, Head does not suggest Railflex bindings with these skis, this is the reason they are not available pre-setup for them.
All in all these skis appear to be very stout and I find them to be very modern looking and attractive without being over the top or obnoxious. Since this will be my first foray on wide waisted skis, I am very excited about trying these out and will post my impressions when I do.
