Another mindless but potentially inspirational post:

What are your personal fitness goals for this summer and pre-season and how are you doing?

Me? To recover from my injury, and drop a few pounds. Be in the best shape I can for this season; So far? Surgey was a huge sucesss, starting to rehab, dropped 7 pounds. Currently at 169!

Bought my girlfriend a wii fit. That's all my plans so far. (and it's working!)

I have found that the best way to get in shape is to never get out. :

I had very serious plans to lose weight. So I've gained a little. Arggghhh!

Hey WTFH, tell us about the wii fit. I heard it hooks up to a balance board of some kind. Is it good ski training?

I'm thinking about the Ride 542 10K coming up. Six miles from White Salmon lodge to Artist Point...only six miles except for the 1700' up you have to run.

My goals were to learn to rollerblade and mountain bike. I'm still a beginner in both, but making progress. I developed some knee pain cycling, but that seems to have resolved with a new road bike, new shoes and pedals, all meticulously aligned and fit.

I figured losing weight could only help my knees, so I've lost ~13 pounds since the end of June. Also the new bike is about 10 pounds lighter than the old one. So I've shaved off 23 pounds from my bike/rider combination, which has made a tremendous difference hill climbing!

My Goal is next year to win a Sport XC race, and complete a 24 hour race solo on a MTB. So far I have level out my weightloss at 170lb but will continue to build muscle strenght and more importantly my Vo2 max.
My plan is to ride a bicycle 100 to 140 miles a week. I started in May and I am mostly on track. Last weekend, I hiked about 22 miles which is a good workout. I'll also Rollerblade about 8 miles, 4 to 8 times a month.

I'm not trying to lose weight at this point. I've been eating well enough to increase my fitness & activity level. I have lost more than 5 Lbs, but better yet, I'm shedding inches.

Sincerely,

Michael

I am doing quite well. I am now in my growth phase (lost plenty of lard, now packing on muscle mass) cardio is upto 1.5hrs on some nights. Eating healthy, drinking way less. Back and knee aches are way down.

On a negative note, seems I have more than one ganglion cyst in my hands and some knuckle pain that will not go away, going to get an MRI to see whats going on, blood work so far tested negative for any arthritis or lyme disease. At least these issues will not impact my skiing much.

My goal is to be a very lean 200lbs of muscle by sliding season.

You should seriously make a road trip to Stanley Park for the seawall. It's a fun, level 5 mile rollerblade, and you can reward yourself at the finish with an aranciata rossa sorbetto at Mondo Gelato. I try to do that 4 or 5 times each summer.

That's a good goal man. Keep riding as much as you seem to have been and you'll get it. Have you mtb raced yet? Regardless of how you do it's super fun and very addicting.

My goal at the end of the ski season was to win one of the Sport class singlspeed mtb races in my local spring racing season. It's a 12-race series, and at the beginning of the season I was getting 8ths and 10ths and stuff like that. I just don't ride enough during the winter to compete with the riders who don't ski and ride all year round and then peak in the spring. Anyway, though...I kept riding and riding and getting faster and I finished off the last 3 races of the season with a 2nd place, another 2nd place, and then finally got a 1st place in the last race of the spring season. Those last 3 race results felt really good

Now the fall racing series starts in a month and I'll be bumping up to singlspeed Expert division. My goals for right now are top 5 there in that class. We shall see! The Expert guys are really fast and I notice they race with really tall gearing for a singlespeed...so I've been working on improving my cadence with harder gearing and being able to maintain it for longer periods of time.

All my focus this "off-season" has been focused on cycling. Aside from the mtb racing above, I'm riding my first Double Century road ride on Saturday (The Mt. Tam Double, 200 miles & 15,000 ft of climbing). This is mainly a training event for the Tahoe-Sierra 100 mountain bike race I have coming up on September 6th. It's a 100 mile mountain bike race in the high Sierras with 14,000 ft of elevation gain.....and I'll be racing it on a singlespeed. This is the event I've really been training for all season.

After that there are a few 6-hour endurance mtb races that I'll be singlespeeding in....but in the months getting closer to skiing (September, October)...I'll start easing off on the pedaling and start doing more ski specific weight training type stuff.

Keep going to the gym. I've been eating better and I switched over to light beer. I'm around 165lbs and holding steady. I could probably stand to drop another 5lbs.

I finally got my Mt Bike tuned up after sitting in the shed for X# of years. We picked my wife up a bike as well. With the weather warmer and the days longer, a bike ride after I do weights at the gym is a nice alternative to running indoors.

I just to back into skiing last year after a few years off. I'd been going to the gym regulary and I can say that made a big difference in my skiing.

I have done 2 this year up at solitude alot of the really competive types from the bigger Intermountain Cup series show up there.

I only got to run 2 so far because of really sucky job, which I recently quit. but I was really pyched that from June 24th till July 22nd I dropped 9:10 on the same 8.5 mile course. 64:30 to 55:20 despite still only finishing mid pack I was really happy with that improvement.

it hard to read but the results are here.

nice work. If you can chop a similar amount of time off of upcoming races, then you're in the top 5 range based on the times of the leaders in your last race. That's definitely doable....go git it!

That's cool that your race series let's you know your finishing times. My local series just gives us finish order so it's difficult to figure out how your time rates against faster people.

there's one more race at solitude, but after racing there anything else would be easy. I hope to improve what ever place that is I dont know.

Okay, you win.

I'd suggest you come ride the Ride 542 century, but it's the same day. And it's only about 10,000 vertical.

oh man it's not about winning anything. just challenging myself and just trying to push a bit further each year (same as with skiing). there are guys in these events who are just insanely fit and are out to win...I am not even in the same league as them and don't pretend to be. Although it's fun to try and catch them.

just googled Ride 542. That looks like a cool event! Especially the hill climb time trial up to Baker.

You winning was more of a compliment on pushing yourself. Personally, I enjoy competing, not because I want to outdo anyone else, but because it's a great way to push yourself.

I know what you mean about the insanely fit. Yesterday I ran a 10k trail run and on the last 2 mile loop some guy passed me twice at a near sprint.

dammit I hate it when that happens. nothing motivates me more to get faster/fitter when that happens.

Do you think any of these "insanely fit" are doping? That's actually a complaint I hear on bikeforums - because amateur racers aren't tested, a certain proportion of them are taking something.

Here's an article by an amateur cyclist who experimented with doping:

Oh man I don't even want to think about that. Just for their own health moreso than a fair leveling of the playing field...I hope they're not.

I remember reading that article back in the day. Scary stuff.

I am in shape...round it a shape.

Moving to the Fitness forum... See you there...run..run...run...

Yep, I got goals! And I'm well on the way to reaching them. First it was a 2 day mountain bike ride in Winter Park. Check. Riding 40 miles on my mountain bike with slick tires. Check. Next up, an aquabike race. Check (and finished 3rd!). Next on the list is a 70 mile road ride in Boulder County. Give me 5 weeks and I'll be there.

Oh, and I've dropped 18lbs of fat and who knows how much muscle I've gained. I know I'm down 3 inches around the hips...
Recover from injury, build up sidelined muscles and generally get into *ss busting mode. I'm 2.5 months post op (acl reconstruction) and my ortho has a very specific rehab plan, which is conservative compared to some but has great results. I'm being a good girl and not cheating, following the rationale that a dealing with a longer wait now is far better than more restrictions later.

Worth every penny, although they are like gold dust over here - I managed to get mine at full retail price, but you can go onto ebay and pay 2-3 times the retail just to get one!

The software contains about 40 different activities split into 4 sections - yoga/muscle/balance/aerobic.
Yoga and muscle are done with a "personal trainer" showing you how to do them. The balance and aerobic ones are done as games - hula hoops, ski jumping, slalom skiing, tightrope walking, jogging, stepper...

Most of them require you to be on the balance board. It then measures the forces you are putting through your feet and calculates your CoG.

As well as that, you have the "body test" which works out your "wii fit age" - based on your actual age and how you perform in a couple of different tests, along with calculating your BMI based on height and weight.
You can then put in how much weight you want to lose (or what you want to get your BMI down to), and over how long. It will then work out how much per week you need to lose, and will record a graph of how well you are doing. It also records how long you spend doing wii fit exercises, and lets you add in other activities (gardening/sports/...) so you can see how active you are as well.

Definitely like it. In fact I'll be setting it up here shortly to do a bit of exercise...
