Mammoth Finally Getting Commercial Flights!!

Those of us who have longingly pined for the extinct Alpha Air can now rejoice. Mammoth Mountain is going to get one flight a day from LAX starting in December. Rumor is that if all goes well, they'll start a second flight later in the year. The runway is currently completely demolished. This demolition started Memorial Day weekend, which got the rumor mill going that they were strengthening it for commercial flights. At 99 bucks each way....well we'll see! Check the link at

$99 is a highly subsidized fare. I doubt if that route will ever make it on its own. Especially now when leisure routes are being chopped left and right.

I've always wanted to ski Mammoth, but accessibility has always been a problem . Maybe this year?

Flights arriving at 3:25 and leaving at 4:05, there's the subsidy right there. At least a morning flight could have you there in time for a half day ticket. Late afternoon flights assure 2 nights extra lodging + meals & what not (spending money in tourist shops & suporting local commerce) on top of any ski trip.

Don't get me wrong, it sounds like a win-win situation and beats the drive by a long shot! What is it like 6 hours from LA (it's been about 20 years since I've been there). Last time I went was with five other people, 3 of us over 6 ft tall, in a beat up POS old datsun 70's. My butt & knees just got sore remembering about that trip.

The afternoon flight allows East coast skiers to catch the plane in LA. If it were a morning flight, then people would have to fly to LA, get a hotel room, and then catch the plane the next morning.

Regardless, this is great news. Mammoth is a great ski mountain, and making it easier for out-of-state folks to get there is going to be a boon.

99 Bucks is about what it will cost to drive to the mountains NC mountains from my house round trip.
Lemme see here:
Durham NC to 6,000 feet driving costs $100.00 round trip
LA to 12,000 feet by air costs $200.00 round trip.

I'd say that's a fair price indeed.

I'd certainly take advantage of that if I lived in the LA area.

Are there any flights to MM from San Fran?

Actually you probably wouldn't. It only takes 4 1/2 - 5 hours from LA to Mammoth (70 mph most of the way). You would save 1-1/2 hour at best due to the LA traffic and congestion at LAX. Plus it's still cheaper to drive most cars, even driving by yourself. It will be best used as a connecting flight. It would be more useful to SoCal if it flew out of OC or San Diego.
