cr, I'm sure he's already wearing his helmet, body armor, a cup, pole tip covers, etc... Honestly, do you actually know someone who's broken their hip in the parking lot? I'm sure it's happened, but I've never heard of it in 40+ years of going up and down. The list of stuff real and imagined to worry about is getting pretty blown out of proportion to the actual statistical risk, don't you think?
This is very much a 'it better snow damn soon' kind of thread. Never have so many over think so much about so little. It's really easy. Cat Tracks and similar work. You can tuck them into the powder cuff of your pants when you're not wearing them and call it a day. Speaking only for myself, I put them on at the car (yeah, I'm a gaper jong) and walk up to the hill. Very sure footing and all. Or don't use them. It's your (third person) choice.
