The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep when he crashed into the race, said police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez.

I guess you always have to assume the cars don't see you

Wow, that is one scary photo. I suppose it happened awfully fast, but did they get any warning at all? Like from the photog?

When I'm out on the public roads, either motorcycle or bike, I always keep one thing in the front of my mind.

EVERYONE in a car is trying to kill me......:

That's awful.......Because of bad drivers, after 30 years of professorial driving it looks like I will be surrendering my CDL. High blood pressure from stress related working enviorment. Prolly a good thing before I have a heart attack.

I commuted in Silicon Valley for 20 years on a bike. I used to think the same thing. One day in a quiet neighborhood a woman pulled up to a stop sign on a cross street. She looked at me, I looked at her. She came to a complete stop and I resumed peddling as my direction had no stop. She then pulled out in front of me and my last thought was "I going to find out what it's like to get hit by a car". My next thought was talking to the EMT on the way to the hospital. No serious injury but quite an experience.

Commuting home last night got pinched towards the curb by a woman in a Suburban talking on the phone. I slapped the passenger door pretty good which scared the death out of her. Her comment to me when I rolled up at the stoplight "I did not see you" while still holding the cell phone to her ear! :

SJB,

I can almost hear that phone conversation.... "....and he went to look to see if they had any in my size.......@*%@!......some damn guy on a bike just plowed into my car!!!.......oh, where were we, YES, he came back with the new shoes, they had 6 1/2 after all"

Way too many car drivers seem to be SO busy doing EVERYTHING but paying attention to driving....I'm actually amazed that far more people aren't killed every day than already are. :::

The photo is pretty messed up.

I was just about to venture into the world of bicycle commuting. Then I get a call from my folks. They were all freaked out, saying "don't do it Johnny!" You see, my cousins, wifes, brother, was just hit a killed by a 16 year old drunk driver.

Hey, that wasn't a certain Bear's girlfriend was it? Are you sure it wasn't a GMC Yukon?
