TR: Utah HelmetCam Action 05/25

Some Notes:
The snow is really crusty (hence the shakyness of the camera) and this is my first go at Final Cut Studio 2 and using a helmet cam (hence the poor angle in some of the shots). I expect the quality of the footage and editing to improve as I get better at this.

High-Res (640x480) Version: http://www.jakecast.com/helmetcast/helmetCast1.m4v

Low Quality YouTube Version:

17 inches of fresh was the day before.

Just was skiing with jakecast got about 4inches of new on top of slushly crud/avy debris it actually skied really well.

We tried to get some chase footage and it kinda of worked Ill see what he posts up.

Jake, love the updates and the helmet cam vid. Damn you for making me jealous though.

What helmet cam did you get? I am looking to get one before next season. Quality looks decent on yours. Here is to hoping there is something that is reasonably priced and does 720p widescreen by then.

Its $650ish dollars same one that TGR uses, to be honest I think it the way to go jsut buy though backcountry and return it when anything goes wrong with it.

http://www.backcountry.com/store/VIO...a-Package.html

quite honestly after seeing it used its the other day there is no way that when I buy one I would buy something else.

Its military grade(they put this on tanks on stuff to get training video) and shock, crush, grit, and water proof. Its also works in a wide temputare range.

Sage, eric and jemery use it, its the best. all the TGR helmet camera are shots with this or a small HDV camera on someone helmet. which make this at 650 seem like a much better deal.

Thanks for the info! Here is to hoping a new model is out before next season.

At the rate you guys are still getting snow, next season may still be this season for you.

Jake,

You missed the M.I.A. show a week ago sunday. She killed it. Loudest show I've ever been to....

Wow! U Have R Snow

I was out at Kirkwood and the rock exposure would make top to bottom runs challenging. Its there if you want to hike, but, here we see lifts, and full coverage with the nit-pik note it might be crusty. Dude, its nearly JUNE.

M.I.A. was in SLC? and I missed it? WEAK!

It's a POV.1 from VIO.

Things I would recommend:
-Get it from backcountry for their return policy. VIO has some iffy customer service. My bottom cover lid broke the first night I had it and they told me I'd have to buy a new one and that it was clear misuse on my part. I hadn't even shot with it. :
-Make sure you get the wide angle lens (that's what I'm shooting with). It has the product number VIO0002 on backcountry.

The camera shoots at 720x480, but I downscale it a bit (640x480) for iTunes friendly format (eventually I'm going to start a podcast of HelmetCam segments in iTunes).

I think a 720p cam (1280x720) would be awesome but is a couple years off at least. Cameras with that kind of res have trouble with jitter and what not.

Cheers,
Jake

Thanks for the most annoying winter skiing shots at the end of May!
Nice vid. It is difficult to tell what the snow is like. Does TGR use some kind of filtering on the lens to help show the snow?

btw, is there anything that happens at Snowbird that Bushwpa isn't a part of?

It was a bit low-light conditions which is why the snow is hard to make out.

This footage was actually shot without Josh, I did shoot some with him on Monday that I'll post up next week in HelmetCast 2 :-p

You should get to know whomever made that last vid of Bushwpa and friends at Snowbasin. There was some real nice editing on that with the music.

Sweet!, just as a suggestion, try raising the camera just a couple of degrees to get less of the ski tips and more of the terrain ahead of you. Excellent though. Thanks for the fix. I got a Vhold camera, very nice setup. Also, the tunes, nice sampling of the Clash's "straight to hell".
