OT: Don't know if I'll ski a lot this season

Sorry for the completely useless post but I'm feeling sort of - I got laid off for the 2nd time in 4 months and though this is only my 2nd season, I was planning to ski 10+ days (not a lot to some I know). Now since skiing is so damn expensive and I don't even have my own equipment, I'll have to rethink that.
On the bright side, I'll lurk here to read about your adventures, and the slopes will probably be safer

Defcon, you have all my simpathy...
Since the birth of my children the number
of days spent on the snow has been dramatically reduced...(from 10 to 30 to...4/5 per season) :

BTW Roto's suggestion is interesting,
esp. if you don't have a family yet.
OTOH, Roto, mountain communities here in Italy aren't that open...tourists are very welcome, settlers are another story thought... :

corrected some typos...

get a job at the mountain...like that. buddy up with a friend and go 2 for 1 deals...and dont feel guilty about skiing when you do have a little pocket change..its therapy.

smile, you'll get through it!!

Sorry about your job loss. seriously think about the resort/ski area option. I sure wish I had when I was younger.

Yo, Defcon! Check it out.

Sorry to hear about that. But, be resourceful, maybe this is a signal to you to work less, and ski more!! Good luck!

My own situation sounds very similiar to Matteo's description. With a 2 year old and a new baby on the way in January, skiing is down on the priority list. But I'll squeak in a couple weekends this year... Hopefully with another good snow year in the NE, they'll be EPIC! If I can get a few days at MRG and Magic in similiar conditions to last year that'll keep me happy.

Is it 5 yet?

The current economy is TOUGH. My company is laying off the first week of December. Fortunately, my function is understaffed and others are heavily overstaffed (we hired a TON when the ecomomy was booming 2 years ago).

Something to chuckle over while you contemplate moving to the mountains:

Laid Off!

Caution: R rated for a bit of bad language.

Thanks for all the support !

Kevin, that was awesome it definitely put a smile on my face.

good news - I'm single, so I am mobile, and for all the pretty snow bunnies, available

bad news - I'm on an H1 visa, which means I can only work in the IT industry (goodbye ski resort jobs), and makes it harder these days.

But I WILL ski on

There are IT jobs in Boise, Salt Lake City and numerous cities in Colorado. Heck, I have one in Bozeman, MT of all places. You might not get a job at a ski resort but you sure can find one way closer to skiing. Good luck on your job search.

Keep your chin up Defcon, you'll get through it. And, in the meantime, pick up some fudge-striped cookies and Pringles

Does your H1 visa say you have to be in a Technology company or industry? can it be an IT professional in some other type of company? I think I saw openings at a resort posting looking for IT professionals. Possible to service systems that handle sales/computers, and Point of sales systems? It might be worth looking into.
