Haven't played the Black in about 8 years, but shot a 100 from the whites last time and I sukc. You need a good long tee shot on many holes to carry to the fairway, but it's very playable from the white tees. The blue tees - forget it unless you have a huge hammer.
Will be real hard to get a tee time this year with the Open coming back in 2009. Be prepared to have somebody in your foursome sleep all night on line in the parking lot and you might get a time. Not sure how its working out lately, but I'm sure its tough to get out.
The phone reservation system used to be a total scam. If you can't play the Black, the Red and others are still great courses and difficult but much easier to get out on. If you want a much easier time getting out to play, come to eastern LI. Lots of nice courses, easy to get out, and some reasonable prices.
If you want another great course, head all the way out to Montauk and play Montauk Downs. A beautiful, challenging course by Robert Trent Jones. Long, well maintained, with some killer sand traps. I love that course. Can be tough in the summer also, but not as bad as Bethpage.
LI National in Riverhead is another nice course, but tough and a bit pricey. Plenty more to choose from. On the North Fork, Island's End near Greenport has one of the most beautiful holes on the Island, a par three high on a bluff overlooking the LI sound (#16). Spectacular - looks a lot like Pebble Beach. Far less traffic than the drive to Montauk and the scenery is very nice past many farms and outstanding wineries (Pindar to name one).
