Which way does the rack go?

I read this somewhere recently that bikes, just like skis, should be mounted facing backwards in a roof rack.

True or false?

Its all about aerodynamics.....but it really makes only a slight difference.

I say bikes should face forward. If you remove the front wheel to put the bike on the rack as most require, the bike facing backwards puts the seat angle facing upwards. While seemingly insignificant this can provide aerodynamic lift and the bicycle can be pulled from the rack if not properly fastened.

Ask me how I know......:

The headset is probably less likely to get filled with water if you mount it backwards.

I have trays facing both ways so I can get more bikes on shorter bars. I don't think it matters.

I try not to leave the bike on the car when it is raining...

I've only ever seen the bikes loaded backwards when there are multiple bikes. It is a little strange though, I read it is better to load backwards last week, then yesterday I actually saw a single bike loaded backwards.

Bike is getting loaded facing forwards, based on SJB flying bike story.
