anyone been on the 2009 K2 Xplorer and Outlaw yet?

Couple of questions...

Are these skis both the same construction? How much more turny is the Xplorer? What bindings are coming with the Xplorer? How do they handle quick turns on steep pitches?

and...

the most important question...

I have an orange jacket - should this be enough to persuade me to go for the xplorer? :

I've never particularly liked K2 skis, but was favorably impressed with the xPlorer. It's a very turny ski with good edge hold and a smooth ride. Not too demanding, but they still handled moderate speeds quite well. I didn't ski them fast to determine their speed limit, so I can't speak for that. I also didn't ski them in powder (which is more what they're aimed at) so no comments there either. "Worth taking another look at" would be my verdict. Or it would be if I was in the market for new skis.

K2 is owned by the same conglomerate as Marker , so you're going to get Marker bindings when you buy a package. Not sure which one is standard.

sounds all good. what weight and height are you and what length did you ski?
post #4 of 12
ME: 178cm, 80 kg
The SKI: somewhere in the 170cm region. I forget the exact length...

I have two friends who got to demo the Xplorer and that is the ski they want for next year. Both had been thinking of getting the Outlaw, but hesitating, until they skied this ski.

Don't know what the opinion was of next year's Outlaw.

Isn't the Xplorer just a fogey-skinned PE?

what does "fogey-skinned" mean?

As far as i can see, they're different constructions all together.

"fogey" = stodgy old guy.

"skin" = topsheet.

No....it's not that at all.

The Explorer has quite a bit more shape, a multi R sidecut, conventional running surface, higher torsional stiffness, and the typical K2 "feel". The "E" is more stable on groomers and in crud and has better grip and dampening. The PE is lighter, more nimble in bumps, and more playful.

Among the few similarities are the waist width and country of origon.

If you skied it in a Midwest demo, it was the 177--that's the only size the rep set up for demos this spring.

To me, it skied very much like a bigger, smoother Recon.

Both the Outlaw and Explorer are the same cap construction as the Recon. The Outlaw is a tad wider and has less sidecut.

I love this ski to bits. 182cm 80kg, I have the 177. No the most technical review but it handles everything I throw at it. It's a very confidence inspiring ski for me :) I'd class myself as 'almost expert', I can ski everything but have a lot of room for improvement.
