Race stock GS - Volkl or Fischer?

I've been skiing on 2007 Volkl Racetiger GS in 185 this season and I have absolutely loved them. I found they have great edge hold, are nice and glued to the snow and what I like best is their ease of initiation.

Unfortunately, they delaminated and I sent them back to Volkl. To replace them, the store I got them from may give me some choices.

So I'm probably picking between the 2008 Racetiger GS in 185 or 187 and the 2008 Fischers in 188.

I have not tried the new 27 m Volkls. Does anyone know how they compare to the 2007 ski?

Also, I have never tried Fischers but am intrigued by the ski, especially after reading HeluvaSkier's review (http://forums.epicski.com/showthread.php?t=64697). Does anyone know how those compare to the Volkls?

Thanks for the help!

If you get the 183 (I think it's the 183) it's a 23m ski. It skis great. Are you racing on them?

I haven't tried Fischers GS skis, but I regularly get my ass kicked by people skiing on them. They can't be too bad....

I'm mostly coaching now but still do a couple of ACA and University races here and there...

I definitely want a 185-188 since the courses we ski are pretty much FIS sets.

Are you on the Volkl 183 right now?

No, I'm on a Rossi, but I've skied the Volkl (I think it was a 183). We are definitely not on FIS sets.

My shop doesn't carry them. I'm limited to what's on their shelves...

So it's Volkl, Fischer or Rossi. But I don't want Rossi...

Rossi's work well for a lot of people, but they are a totally different feel than a Fischer or Volkl. If he really likes the feel of Volkl, I don't know if a transition to Rossi would be the best fit. A switch to Fischer would be easy.

I think you would be happy with either, but my impression of the 188 Fischer is that it is a total tank. Heavy and damp. It really requires some speed and hard snow.

The Volkl would probably be a bit friendlier and easier to ski.

As a non-racer, I don't see too many demos for race stock skis.

Do the major brands follow the trends observed in the non-stock skis, for example, atomic having a more solid feel and Fischer feeling more high-strung, and Rosi being middle of the road?

I was actually on Rossi before switching over to Volkl. I didn't have the new snub-nose ones and was pretty happy with the Rossis. Then I switched to Volkl and was a much more confident GS skier. I find them to much more solid than my old Rossis.

That being said, I did take one run one the 181 07 Rossis from one of the girls I coach. They were shorter than what I was used to so it wasn't the best basis for comparison but I actually thought they were really nice skis. What I liked a lot about them was the way they initiated so smoothly. However, once on edge, they didn't have the stability or power of my Volkls. I would be interested in trying the 184 for a better comparison. But since I like the Volkls, I figure I should stick to something similar.

One of the guys I coach skis on the 184 Rossis and tried the 08 185 Volkls. He found the Volkls to be much more substantial.

i tried fischers 08/09 team skis at a demo in early march

the gs team skis did exactly what i expected them to. held on anything and were damp as all hell. loads more pop at the end of the turn than i was expecting though...much nicer than the fischers i had tried years ago...im a bigger guy 190 lbs and i loooooooved them. they kicked the snot out of every other gs ski i tried that day, including rossis, atomics and salomons...

unfortunately the day we tried volkl there was a lot of snow and i was having way too much fun on the grizzlys to step into a FIS gs ski otherwise i could compare them for you..hehehe
