Bike to Work Day - May 16th

So, uhhhh I did this...

http://www.biketoworkalbany.org

I did the research, made the cold calls, developed some plans, recruited some backers, got the volunteers, held the meetings, arranged for the publicity, purchased the domain and developed the web site.

I guess my question is... am I nuts?

Seriously, will people ride their bikes to work?

If you live in the area, will you?

If not (regardless of where you live), why not?

If you're famous, will you give me a plug?

If you're not, but have a lot of reach, will you give me a plug?

Thanks,
rob

Bike-To-Work day is a national event culminating Bike-To-Work week, May 12-16. Many cities are participating in both.

I ride my bike to work, but not on Bike to Work Day. Every year it comes on the one day of the year that I have to drive a big truck because I have to haul equipment around. I never get the goodies or the stickers because I'm driving a gas guzzler. Grrrrr...

bump for this important topic. I participate in bike to work day/week. It's pretty well organized in Marin with coffee stops and bike shop handouts on the way to SF. Good for you for organizing it in Albany.

I actually took some of the concepts from the San Fransisco event page. The energizer stations looked like a model that could grow to fit any geographic area that wanted to support the event.

I've got a firm to provide online event registration so we can measure participation and we will also have an idea if we have enough bike racks.

Everyone I asked was willing to jump on board. Now that we are live, I am nervous that nobody will ride.

The folks I work for are promoting this, but for Earth Day April 23rd.

I have ridden my bike to work for about three years and I had previously noted that Bike to Work Day was not a big event here.

People at work ask me about cycling to work on a semi frequent occasion.

You know how it is. You are on the elevator with your helmet and someone asks, "Did you ride your bike in today?" I usually cannot help myself and say something like, "Nope, I took the bus."

I knew some people at the NY Bicycle Coalition who offered a Road 1 course for commuters that I participated in a couple years ago.

So, I volunteered to coordinate the event.

You know that is actually a believable response. Here busses have bike racks on the front and back. People can ride their bike to the bus stop, then ride their bike from the bus stop to their destination.

Yep, sometimes I take the ferry or bus in & ride home. I don't have to clean up in the office and I can get a 23 mile ride home in the evening.

Anyway, back on topic: Good luck with your event!

I rode today for the first time this season. I try to at least once a week but with a 54 mile round trip it makes for a long day time wise. It's nice to get some miles in that would otherwise be tough.
I'm going to research the bike to work day and try to get some of my co-workers on board. Some of these folks live close enough to walk here and think I am nuts for riding in!

Wish they'd called Bike to Work on Popecade day.
