I'm getting ready for a 16 day raft trip through the Grand Canyon. Tast testing box wines could be extemely painful and wasteful. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

On a raft or canoe trip, any wine will taste great after the 5th day. Have fun. Only 16 days? A commercial motorized trip?

Get a Sangria.

Sangria's better when it's made with cheap wine.

It will also be nice and refreshing when it's hot out.

Black Box is fairly good. It won't break and is of reasonable quality.

Nope, it is a private trip with a new 8 person permit. They changed the system a bit. and these short, small group permits are less impossible to obtain.

It still took eight years. The lottery I won had 120 entries, of which I had 8, one for each year I had been on the waiting list.

Thanks, I've seen that one mentioned before. Guess I'll try a box.

It'll be an awesome trip. Eight sounds like a good number as long as the group dynamics are compatible. Post a TR when you return. I hiked out at Phantom Ranch after 7 days on a 21 day trip.......very hard to leave the trip. Our next shot is two years I hope.

Nice! I brought the Black Box last summer and nobody complained. Boy was it hot! 108 everyday, but a great trip. Don't go to your campsite until the shade hits it.

Were you taking out?

We're taking out at Diamond.

I'm hoping for a bit cooler weather....normals for Phanton in May are 60-90.

I'm off to oar boat school in the snow this weekend.

If you want something fairly inexpensive, L'ambiance Red isn't bad.

The staff at the BC Liquor store in Kelowna told me Mission Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon was about the best of the box wines. I tried it and it seems good.

Buy any box wine, pour it out and fill with anything you want. Restaurants fill wine bottles with box wine, so try the opposite...

I vote for the sangria option as well. It will be very tasty in the heat! I had some last summer and it was actually pretty good. We added fresh fruit to the pitchers we poured it into.

I'm partial to Killer Juice Cabernet Sauvignon. It's a little better than Black Box in My opinion. I'v taken it on a number of raft trips. last time I rowed the Grand I made a flip proof container for 12 bottles of wine out of a 20MM rocket box (old metal ammo can). Put a thin piece of foam (< 0.5inch) in the bottom. Then use the cardboard (0.25 inch version) seperators from a case of wine to space the bottles. If you want put another thin piece of foam or card board on top. I've use this system on the Grand, Cataract, Yampa, San Juan rivers and it works well. If it is hot keep the rocket box in a hatch where it is cool.

The Black Box Cabernet Sauvignon is decent. I take it backpacking. However, their Merlot doesn't cut it.
