Where would you go?

If you could travel anywhere in the world to ski or ride, where would you go?

Personally, I'd like to ski in Japan, but that's probably a little rich for my blood. I'm looking for some suggestions for other places that would be fun, interesting, and a bit easier on the wallet. Any suggestions? What's on your personal wish/experience list?

I've heard Chile is fairly amazing. Most interesting that I've actually skied is Chamonix. Beats B.C. like a gong.

Agrentina. Fly into Buenos Aries, "the Paris of South America" and check it out for a few days (don't miss the Tango District), then to Las Lenas (which is next to the wine country), with trips to other Argentine ski areas if time and money permit.

The other option if you want a less involved trip is to go to Portillo, Chile, with a stop at Los Nevados outside of Santiago on the way if you want some variety. Portillo is an all inclusive one stop experience with no hassle integrated hotel and skiing.

Either trip you will literally be skiing upside-down compared to North America, and you get to do it with condors overhead. Their season opens around June 15th, so you can start planning now. Best time to go is late August thru early September.

What's wrong with skiing near home?

Not knowing what you're looking for, it's hard to suggest where to go...

Maybe I'm missing something, but why Japan. Isn't the question ANYWHERE??? If someone offered that to me, Japan won't even make the top 10.

Japan??? Hmmm....

Actually, I'm going skiing in Japan in 2 weeks. But ANYWHERE? Heli-skiing in the Himalaya!

Japan? In May?

Sorry for the ignorant question. But where in Japan has good spring skiing?

If?

I can go anywhere... and that's the beautiful thing about living in the 21st century... plan it and you can do it.

I have a life-time goal of skiing on each continent, and so far I have:

North America: All over the place
Europe: Chamonix (but I'll be back in a better snow time sometime-- come on US Dollar)
South America: Termas de Chillan, Chille

Still on the radar:
Asia: Japan: Still working on the Beta -- thinking maybe Hakkoda San?
Austro-Zealand: New Zealand: This one's gonna require a good snow year... a long way to go for not much.
Africa: Obviously not a ski mecca, but there's a place in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco that would make for an interesting day trip from Casablanca.
Antarctica - This will require a bit of mountaineering and a whole buncha cash -- probably the last one to tick off my list.

I'm thinking I might be able to pull off Japan next winter, if I can convince my brother to head out over the ocean for it. And NZ... well if the winter seems to start off strong, maybe I can pull that off this year, though I've already blown a lot of my vacation days this year.

I don't think the skiing will be awesome (given that I live in Summit County, CO), but I'll be arriving for a meeting in Sapporo the night of May 5, and I'm going to drive like mad early the next morning to get to closing day at either Niseko Grand Hirafu or Niseko Annupuri on May 6. This year, I'll have skied closing days at Vail, Breck, A-Basin, and Sapporo. Nuts.

P.S. It's totally dumping here, right now.

They don't go as high as the highest peaks, but you should still be able to get high enough to get some great turns in as long as you don't want to ski an 8000m peak.

Oops... looks like someone has landed a helicopter on everest.

There are three heli-skiing operations in the Himalaya that I know of. Sylvain Saudan has run Himalaya Heliski out of Srinigar, Kashmir since about 1992. All-told, one-week trips cost from the USA cost over $15,000 per person....
