If you could live anywhere?

What mountain would you choose as your home base? Why?
For the best snow and challenging terrain: Salt Lake City. For year-around & overall quality of life: Lake Tahoe.

If I was limited to one resort in the U.S., it would be Snowbird.

What makes you say that? The intense gambling?

Whistler/Blackcomb

You'd never get tired of trying to ski all the runs there are so many, and you could ski year round.

What's the weather pattern?

Much like the rest of the Pacific Northwest, it can be wet below 2500 feet and snow above. But it snows well into the Spring and there's snow year round on the Glaciers. You can ski as long as you want most years. Yet summers in town are great. Fishing, kayaking, biking. It's all there.

I would live here. Have to say, I'm living the dream - especially this year.

Zurich (or Geneva).

I might get my wish. Will know next week (or two).

I'm not a "home mountain" type. I like to ski a week here and two weeks there, mixing it up. So a city with easy access to many mountains are more to my liking.

"IF" I could live anywhere?

Whats stopping me? For that matter, whats stopping any of you?

Southern California....I could then ski and go to the beach on the same day.

Maggot writes: "Whats stopping me? For that matter, whats stopping any of you?" I'm not sure whether the answer is "nothing" or "everything."
When I was 19, I remember riding a chairlift at A-Basin with a man from Pennsylvania. He said "Man, I wish I could live out here." I said " So, why don't you ?"
Now, decades later, I understand why he looked at me like he did. I'm sure he felt that his family, his job, or his bank account would stand in the way. The dream always comes with a price attached.

Precisely my sentiments. :

1- Minnesota from late october for grouse/pheasant/duck/deer season - through Christmas. (Close relatives & siblings live in MN.)

2- Here (Zao in northern Japan) from New Year's until March for tree/pow season. (The inlaws live here + I have 4 gondolas and acres of trees to myself I'm serious... I only ski fresh snow at this resort... ever. (assuming it's been cold.)

3- March = AK (This won't be feasible much longer. But it needs a yearly pass-through.)

4- From April till next hunting season = Tahoe, where the retired parents build log cabins for fun. Besides, Tahoe rules.

Actually, I'm aspiring to the above yearly schedule now. It will take me another year or so to completely pull off the system, but that's how we're planning to raise kids... overseas with both families.

(btw- AK is just my "yeah, right..." element. A 1-2-4 sequence is the actual goal.)

I would live in British Columbia.

Terrain and snow.

Not sure about which home mountain I would choose, but All of the main ones would be within driving distance, and the back country can't be beat.

Two very close choices:

Alta Ut
Alta Wy

Snow is everything.

I like it right where I am. It has the perfect balance of small town/big city. There is more to do than time to do it. Every kind of climate except for tropical is within two hours drive. There are mountains on one side and water on the other, all within less than an hour (the water's about 2 minutes from my house). Skiing, hiking, kayaking, sailing, camping are all in my back pocket. There is a thriving arts community which I'm part of that someone rated as second per capita (however they judge that) to Santa Fe in the US. Having Baker as a home mountain is great and Whistler's right down the road.

Works for me.

Right where I am at Bridger Bowl.

(Sorry--I didn't understand the question initially.)

I've never gambled at Tahoe, so I can't answer your question .

The skiing is very challenging & varied at Tahoe. The area also supports a wide range of activities in a unique setting. Biking, hiking, boating..., the list of outdoor activities available is unlimited. The climate is almost perfect as is the social culture.

Being within driving distance of San Fransisco, one of the worlds great cities, is another reason.

Gambling is not of interest to me, why do you ask :?

I figured anyone that would pick Tahoe for its overall quality of life enjoyed gambling given the large number of casinos there.

Anyone still trumpeting Utah because of the quality of the snow, really needs to get out more. You want the best snow with the steepest lines then go to AK.

Whistler is a great choice.

If you want to mix quality of life, culture, food, histiory and mountains then number one would have to be Chamonix.

Same as Que, we are living the dream. Who knows what that dream will be in 10 years when the kids are gone, but for now this is it.

Does it get the heavy fog that kills visibility in the PNW so often?

For me its goes like this...

AK
Jackson
Utah

I can afford utah, I cant afford jackson, and cant afford AK. As soon as I can I wll be tempted to move.

Max, no one has had to leave the state of California to gamble for almost 2 decades. In that time there have been no new casino's built (actually long before that). Casinos are basically only 1 block on an enourmous Alpine Lake. The purpose of the casinos has almost entirely changed over that time. During the past decades the development of family resorts around the lake has dramatically increased because - Lake Tahoe is an outdoor nature type of destination. When the skiing is over, the beauty just increases.

So my official response to the actuall thread is, if I could live anywhere, it's where I live now. Close enough to Tahoe, but I never need to shovel snow.
