Dampness promotes corrosion. Plus the salts/lime/etc found in some concrete formulas will exacerbate the corrosion if your basement/garage has a bare concrete floor. Yes, a storage wax is supposed to guard against this, but my preference is to store my boards away from these hazards.
If you have a dry "finished" basement, it's probably not a problem. Mine is neither, so I store my skis upstairs.
I never recommended hot storage - I'm not sure what the upper limit of temperature is for a ski to remain undamaged, but I'm pretty certain that it's a lot hotter than what you'd find in the living space of your house.
