My sister wearing our mom's jacket from the 70's with the vintage patches from nearly everywhere she skied with my dad.  Also check out the pole grips...

The brakes are tempting but Looks really are the choice and you don't seem to be averse to skiing with safety straps. I am eek.gif. I am contemplating a re-mount also. These 195 Head Masters have not been skied on. The N17 with vintage Uni-Stop brakes or the black  N77 with integral brakes? And no, I did not consider skiing them with the Miller bindings.

I have a set of miller toe and heal irons I send you for freeeek.gif  I think you guys have talked me out of the new bindings on the 360's   what if I put these on?  I think the black toe wings will look classy on the heads.  I may even have a complete set of leather LOOK safty straps too.

thejunkman,  nice video.  I liked your comment at the end about it being hard.  I always wait to video for the second run.  I figure the first run is for testing  the ski/ boot combination and dialing in the particular technique  to turn then and look good doing it.

I may be able to get out on the fischer SENATORS soon.  How were the presidents?  do you have a review?

Dynamic VR27's !!!!

I skied my treasured VR27's at Okemo this week and had a blast!! Stable, sweet and very fast -- just as I remember them!  This was my first ski outing after a fifteen year layoff and boy was it a thrill!!  Thanks again to CJE911, Philpug and everyone for stoking the fire with the Killy article and info on Dynamic.

The VR27's remain my all-time favorite ski!  The Fisher Progressors and Volkls I demoed were impressive, but just not me.  BTW: the guys at Totem Pole tuned my VR's beautifully.  They also replaced the broken Marker bindings with fresh Marker Comp 12.0's.  I may lose some vintage cachet with the new bindings, but I'm not a purist and they work fine.

Sidenote: Son-of-Dynamic? Neo-Straight Ski?  I also skied a pair of 2012, 183cm, Dynastar 6th Sense Twisters which I really loved.  Ken and Torin (at Totem Pole) are highly enthusiastic for this "modern straight ski."  To me, they do feel beautifully anachronistic, but I'm not sure what specific vintage ski they most resemble.  Since the Twister is a narrow bump ski -- maybe Olin MkIV's?  I don't know, but one of the Okemo instructors saw the Twisters on my feet and commented, "I see you have the new, old skis" ;-)  That's how they felt to me, like new vintage classics.

Nonetheless, VR27's are tops!  Thanks again to everyone, especially for this marvelous "Retro Memories" thread -- it's the best ski reading on the internet!!

I just noticed these as I was rummaging. New in box.  After playing with the orange tabs a bit, it looks like they counteract the tensioning spring  to hold the heel piece above the plane of the plate making it easier to handle when mounting.

Yes, that makes perfect sense. Now I'll have to find a pair that are New In the Box!

For the full video that clip was taken from click here http://teammgr.weebly.com/fun-day-ski-day.html  Warning! only the ending clip has "retro" gear in it.

Thanks for the compliment!  That video/run was the end of the day and I was pretty tired and wanted to make sure I got some video on them.  I did make a few more runs on them and felt better.  Your right I should have made some practice runs first instead of just jumping from my 172cm modern shaped ski onto a 215cm straight ski (its been probably 10 years since I have skied a straight ski)  I might in the future do a little video commentary/review on them and maybe some other skis in the collection, but we will see.

My review (Cliffs notes version) Fischer President 215cm ALU steel

They feel like a very light ski, lighter in hand than my modern Atomic M2Tron 172cm (which I know is not a light ski even by current standards), bindings of course are not step-in so fiddling with the minimal adjustments is kind of a pain, but once adjusted I felt VERY connected to the ski, as in these would probably break my knee/leg before they released.  The bindings have the "competition" springs installed.  On the snow (mind you I just cleaned up the edges with a file and waxed them) they are a dream to ski once you get enough speed to make them work.  That is the thing with these they are pretty stiff naturally and are difficult to manage at slow speeds such as getting to the run, moving in the queue line, but once on the slope you can really let these things fly and they are pretty confidence inspiring at speed and are very stable.

icon14.gificon14.gificon14.gif Impressive Mack!!  I have another pair of silver Splitails but I am very much embarrassed to say I put modern Tyrolia demo bindings on them. This was before I discovered this thread and they had already been drilled twice so that's it for them.

Somewhere around 07 I saw a pair of really nice condition 204 cm splittails with Markers at a thrift store.  I came very close to walking out with them.  Had I done so I would have skied them once then screwed them to the fence out back.  I passed on the info and location to Rossi Smash I believe.  They were gone the following week so hopefully someone is enjoying having them somewherebiggrin.gif

I just mounted my 1976 223 cm Descente DHs with bindings that Royal gave to me. I had been holding out for the red N17 as that was what was originally on the ski.

Grazie Mille, Royal!

I'll be using them over the next four days as inspection skis for the DH Camp and Masters Nationals DH races. I'll be using a Solomon safety strap of the era, but we didn't need no stinkin' safety straps when we ran DH in 1976, so the photo is true to the way they were used. These are the very same skis that I was on in the b&w photos I've published before. They also were winning skis in the North American Junior DH Championship in 1976.

Cool find on the Hexcel split tails!  What would be even kuuuuler would be if you could find a pair of the pre-production "skunk works" top  sheets.

Prego! I miss Italy. Ciao completes my command of Italian, however. :-)

The DH training went well today, but I didn't get actions shots of the Decentes and N17s. There will be other opportunities. Long ski day. April 1st.

The bindings worked very well. Your overhaul and cleaning is greatly appreciated. I left them very loose (two) for the first day and I (frequently) twisted out but never will skiing, just when I was handling gates during the set. I didn't need them to come off, fortunately. They held well for simply skiing and slipping. To really ski them, I'll set them higher.

I have a pair of yellow ones with red lettering

I lived in Italy for a couple of years. I miss it too.  I'm sure you know how to set the bindings but I'll explain what I do just for those who may be wondering.   I place a boot into the binding and set the forward pressure/gap toe height and toe wings then  I put my boots on and set the skis on the carpet.  I then force my self to release in the three directions.   forward by driving my knee toward the ski tip and toe out and toe in.  I start with  the tension low and bring it up slowly mabe a 1/2 turn at a time.  this takea a bit of feel for the limits of your own leg/knee joints.  A good comparison can be made with a modern binding/ski combo.  I ski with my DIN pretty low 6 to 6.5.   and I try to set up these vintage bindings a bit lowere just to be on the safe side and I never really ski these skis/ bindings to thier limits.

Lo and behold, subsequent to my last post I was able to find an image of the boots in question.  Not quite sure the pleasure and pain invested in the originals are worth the 75.00 the current optimist is asking but...

Happy to hear if any of the pundits have any more info on these boots.
