Joal  interesting skis.  I wonder if Straval is a play on Strato similar to the Stratix.

I had a  couple of interesting finds this week. red Look Nevadas and some red Hanson's  there is no size on the boots. (there is a 4 on the heel)  but they feel like a size 10 or 11  the BSL is 330mm

I can't ski them (too big)  any one interested?

I started thinking it could be a contraction of Strato Avalanche but more likely Strato Avalement and maybe a European model.

got out on my SUPERGLASS again today.  this time with the buckle Koflach boots.  the laceup Molitors are much better boots and more comfortable.  and I had no prerelease issues with the Marker simplex toe/rotomat heel combo.  I even managed a retro sweater and hat.

Some of my retro memories :)

Skiing since age of 3, so now more then 40 years... My parents and grandparents were all skiers, so our house was always full of different skiing equipment - downhill as well as backcountry.

After serious cleaning on my mum´s old house, most of our family vintage stuff is gone, mum though that it´s just rubbish and trashed all those old ski from 1920-1930, what my grandpa had at home in dust somewhere under roof.. I was hot, when I discovered it.

Anyway, one of oldest ski I remember were those "attaché" ski, handmade by Gresvig, Oslo - Norway. My mum used them for sure at late 60´s and 70´s. Not sure when exactly were made. Looks quite "modern" - full plastic top etc.. English product advantages printed on the ski at binding section. They were equipped with Gresvig safety Kandahar, later swapped for Tyrolia Rocket 100 and Clix 90 rear, what my mum was using until she finished with broken leg some time ago...

Do you know this ski? When was made?

My first decent ski were Czech made Artis Apollo, from 70´s.. This brand does not exist anymore, it was communist overtake from private ski manufacturer and after complicate operations is there now company Sporten, I think.. They make quite good czech ski - for example our olympic winner Ales Valenta on February 19, 2002, won the winter olympics gold medal in the freestyle aerials competition where he succeeded to perform the first triple back flip with five twists in the world - on the Sporten skis..

Photo%252019.02.12%252018%252003%252020.jpg

For those, who don´t know nothing about "communists" past in central europe, there was almost impossible to buy any foreign (means western made) products. Just things made inside communists block. Time to time was possible to buy western goods, but very rare and people were able to pay for example 6 monthly incomes for pair of ski made by Rossignol or Kneissl or so. Hardcore. Lack of modern technology was main problem for anything made locally, so western products were very valuable and people used them for long time. Impossible to imagine that people would swap the boots every few years or so. In the shops was simply nothing. So owner of Dynafit boots would risk life to loose them for example. Since 70´s there was local production of Marker safety bindings made under licence of Marker at Film studios Barrandov (funny, but true - film studios had bindings production) and were really popular and good quality.

As I mentioned previously, my cousin had luck to get somewhere Marker Rotamat TR, very very rare binding, where was possible to release toe as on the touring models today - for example Marker Duke. Release angle was very low, support arch was made from plastic, but it worked for years in his case... He was very upset as wanted regular Rotamat and not this, but on the mandantory high school ski camp (at that time every highschool student in the country had to pass one week mandantory ski camp and lear basics of downhill skiing) he was racing on Elan ski with this binding in competition of his schoolmates on cross country skis and was in top ten on 10km countryside track :)

Photo%252019.02.12%252018%252002%252028.jpg

We were all using this Market front for long years, even people with Kandahar used this safety front:

Photo%252019.02.12%252018%252002%252055.jpg

When I was about 12 years old, my father managed to buy at special shop at Prague (where they were selling time to time foreign goods) three pairs of Kastle ski for us. Mum, dad and myself got Kastle Champion. At that time something amazing - dual color base with logo visible under transparent material! Something amazing. I was a start on the high school camp at Krkonose mountains. My ski were 20cm longer then I needed - those days was buying very simple - take it or leave it. No chance to get different size. So I managed to learn skiing on lenght equal for GS racing or so :) I managed to find mum´s ski and here is picture. Not very often visible those days, I never saw this type anywhere.

Photo%252019.02.12%252018%252004%252048.jpg

Look at the base - impressive those days:

Photo%252019.02.12%252018%252005%252038.jpg

I was using leather laced boots for quite long time. My first plastic boots were made by Alpina (do anybody know timeframe for production of those models?). Design was almost like leather, but outer material is plastic. Quite low.. When I changed it for real skeletal boots, those were used in the family by several relatives... As I explained, those things were very valuable those days...

Photo%252019.02.12%252018%252014%252008.jpg

My first decent boot (again Alpina for some reason):

Photo%252019.02.12%252018%252012%252019.jpg

Breaks were something new, used them for first time at 80´s I think. We were using leather (red) Marker safety straps or later synhetic straps. Dad and mum had very stylish safety straps "original by Tyrolia" - made from elastic rubber with syntetics, round shape with quick lock hook in red/black color. Never saw them anywhere else. They are gone, but I managed to find empty bag:

Photo%252019.02.12%252018%252027%252026.jpg

Only I cannot find any old photo of my Rossignol 220cm long ski, what I explained few posts ago.. Dark red, white centre with small black Rossignol at front, Smash at rear and big R in white circle at front of the binding. They were hardcore. Impossible to turn :) Would like to know, what they were made for, but I´m sure they had to be produced for speed skiing or so..

At almost the very beginning, about age 10 I had a similar pair of Northland wooden skis with screwed on metal edges.  I cut then down to about 140 cm.  They came with step in bindings very similar to those Tyrolias there.  I replaced them with Salomon 202s before actually nonono2.giftaking them to the lift served ski hill the following season.

I had to go buy straps from the ski area shop before they would allow me on the lift.  You should have seen they odd look I got from the instructor that morning when he was nonono2.gif checking out my gear.  Talk about straight skis, with the tails cut off and bindings moves to plus a helluvalot they probably measured 68-65-64 with an r of infinityroflmao.gifAnd you thought you had it rough in the CCCP?  (just kidding, I know it was probably pretty brutal growing up there).

crgildart > Very nice. I had shortened father´s Artis ski for several years.. with Kandahar in combination with Massag front. Hard days.. Remember I had two sets of hooks on sidewalls of the ski - so I could control the tension of the spring around boot and make it fully or more or less open in toe area.. And sure bamboo sticks with leather grips and large metal disc with leather straps.. I remember every detail, even when it´s like 35 years ago.. :)

Anyone seen these? I can date them from the bindings and the fact that these are on them makes me think they were a high end ski but........

Come to think of it, didn't Mackware post some skis with this name?

I have just returned to skiing after 30+ years of living in the tropical climes of SE Asia and in looking to identify the last pair of ski boots I wore I happened upon this forum.  I have scoured this forum from beginning to end and despite the encyclopedic knowledge and gear galore on display I have come up empty...  The boots were purchased at a king's ransom circa 1979.  While I think that they were possible San Marco, what I remember clearly (aside from excellent performance and fit issues I chalked up to odd feet) was that they were putty grey (or gray if you insist) and a muted burgundy colour (OK, color).  Would be only too happy to have my memory jarred with a photo...

Great memories in looking at all of the mid to late 70s kit.  Despite being newly fitted up in 2012 gear, reading this has me thinking about joining the lot of you with retro gear.

I love all the advertisements thanks,  I made a good find today.  HEAD 360's  in a 205.  excellent condition but with an interesting heal.  Nevadamatic.  anyone heard of these?

I think I'll put a slightly updated binding on these.  the color scheme is perfect.  the pick below is of these bindings on another pair of HEAD's but the effect is the samesmile.gif

I've been looking for some of these for a while.  Now I'll have to go out and do a "HEAD to HEAD"rolleyes.gif test againt the Jean Claude Killy 800's

The second gen Nevada/GP's for sure! 360's a simply too classic to bear a plastic binding, Look (Rossi) or otherwise!

After some more research with the correct name NEVATIC it looks like it was a not a second gen grand prix but a seperate product.  according to one french article it was introduced about 1970 and was supposed to be automatic inthat you didn't neet to bend down and use your hand to close the binding.    I also came across this cool  newspaper ad.  some of you may enjoy this.  I do not know how to post the image but here is the link.
