Some early Lange pix

Rossi, sweet Lange pic on the left.  Lot of memories there.

Didn't the original Langes have black liners?  Think I got my first pair, Lange Standards, in the 66-67 season; they were about $120, which was all the money for a high school kid.  The Standard was a black liner, and the Comp was either red or yellow.  Have no idea how many buckles I blew off of these things, always carried a pocket full of bails and at least one buckle Assembly in the pocket; electricians tape was the Lange owners friend.

Most of the people in my ski school were saying, 'those plastic boots were just a passing fad' and would never stand the test of time.  (A very familiar argument, and still a lame one in our sport)

I got some info on those LOOK branded skis....

"Jean-Francois Lanvers says:
Those go back to the post 1982 era after Look was purchased by France's corporate raider, Bernard Tapie. They feature the "Mondrian" colors that were slapped on everything that was Look branded, from bindings to ski poles to bikes. My guess is 1983. The skis were made by Dynamic and they were not the first that were look branded. A small, limited series of skis were already made in 1982 by Dynamic to help promote Look's "Integral" boot-binding combination in which the "rocker-sole" boot was made by Nordica. "

I've got a pair of 99RS's that will go on the silver pair....

Any Idea if they were a stock dynamic ski with a Look top sheet or a designed by Look ski manufactured by dynamic?

(I got them boxed up.  they should be shipping tomorrow.)

The smiles were mostly from ski performance. That  was the first time on a vintage The Ski and Spademan ever and was impressed with the grip under foot and the ease of turning.

Very nice!

I would put you in a three way tie with Phil and Master's Racer with this outfit except for the helmet and goggles.

Love the poles.

Those sweaters have never been equalled. I loved the ones with the padded arms.

I was told there is no elasticity in the release so it took a couple of hours before I could relax and ski. I cranked them half ways and they held. I believe there may be nothing made today that will allow a ski to flex like the Spademan can, and the metal on metal  retention is better than any of today's plastic bindings. But very awkward to put on. I would hate to have to do that in a couple of feet of powder. The step-ins would be on my shopping list.

And Phil, I had Scotts with those butterflies on them but they were too painful to ski in so the first time out was a short one.  I took them off the Scotts and was happy to find the reinforcing plate inside and mounted them on a spare pair of Polaris but of course they won't work in a normal binding now. A bit of a trade off but I think I will be using them more than I thought.

Heh, It was interesting putting the Spademans on the Huber calibrator and the 'interesting (and inconsistent) results". The step ins do make skiing these much easier...especially with the brakes.

I skied these with the Scotts and it makes me wonder how the hell people skied these back in the 70's....they suck. On the other hand...I skied the Polaris's the week prior and while they were inefficient in skiing with a modern ski, they were still damn comfortable.  I will probably mount up the Polaris's with the butterflies. Oh, and how many spare Polaris's do you have?

nordica polaris 002.JPG

Maybe 'spare' was the wrong word to use. I have 3 full pair and need them all. Notice I have 2 right uppers on the ones I use with the Spademans. Neither upper is original to the lowers. The hinge holes are slightly canted on the lowers but equal on the uppers so the uppers work on a left or right lower. One bolt is origal but I had to find suitable flat replacement bolts so they have a bit of a Frankenstein look to them. As you suggest, they lack a bit in performance but they sure are comfortable.

Obviously a fine line to which will release first, the binding....or the boot. It could go either way with this gear.

Dug out these original Look Nevada II/n17 Grand Prix mounting instructions from 1969. (No plastic turntable covers in sight)

Gotta admit is is pretty hilarious to see a ski with half a boot on it careening down the mountain (as long as it isn't headed right at ya that is..).

After...The Salomon came out in 80, the polaris 81-82. The red ones are second year ones.

RS, any chance you could take some high quality pics or scans of those instrucrtions.  It would be a great resource and fun reading too.

Royal...I don't have a scanner BUT if you click on the picture, it will open in a new box. Then do a save as. This will get you a much bigger picture that you should be able to read.

These 2 items have some sort of publishing number that may contain the year it was published,  250071/6, which could be 1971. They were in a box of unused, new Ess Nevada that I posted a while back. No pictures of the plastic covers and no plastic covers in the box.

The orange ones were the expert version -- they had an exterior metal plate riveted on the inside ankle. One of my friends had them, threw them out on a house move or something along the way and regretted it.

I had the non-expert version, which were gray and black. Same but without the metal plate. They were great boots.

Unfortunately, the internal heel hold down cable snapped (later inspection showed rust) skiing down STH at Snowbird. I stuffed a spare sock inside and kept skiing.

At the end of the day, I couldn't get them fixed (the shop suggested finding the Salomon rep, as if I would have any idea how to do that). Wound up buying new boots that eveining at the base area store for full MSRP retail.:

(Much later, back home, a shop tech tried to fix them by splicing the cable, but it made too big a lump. I saved them for a long time, gave somne parts (the front part of the sole with the toe lug, held on with screws, I think) to my friend with the orange ones. Eventually decided there was no hope of resurrection and pitched them.)

Salomon made a few technical improvements later (and much later dis-improvements which helped kill the category), but I think that first year was the best looking.

I thought you were still skiing those!
;-)

Posted this in another thread.

Technically, it could go here since it's 1984. And there's some boots pictured.
