There was snow in the bindings, so I guess they were being used. Sticker under foot is from Ski Chalet, Arlington VA.

What is worse..the older Olins with 222's or the NEWER ones with Marker FREE10's????

Love those Nordica Polaris!  I remember the epidemic of knee injuries that befell half of the folks I knew that skied them.

Hey, do RD Coyote HeliDogs qualify as "Retro" yet?  I skied mine all morning last Sunday

It is now 2011.  Is "retro" still 10-25 years old with "vintage" being over 25 years old?th_dunno-1[1].gif

As a newcomer, I am hesitant to question Phil's vast knowledge of ski gear because I can't even see the 2nd pair of Olins, but I think the bindings on the Olin Racing are Geze.

Nice shot, thanks. I used to love those broad stripes down the side of racing pants. If you had the guns, the stripe would stretch, striking fear in the heart of your opponents.

Kudos to the thrift shop with skis neatly stacked, nice selection as well..........

Saw some Volant Power Carves at a thrift store asking $25.  The solly 900s on them are worth that.  Alas, I'm out of closet space.   th_dunno-1[1].gif

You'll like the ROC's, nice find especially with the N17's. Which Solies are on those Pre 1200S's?

Never mind the ROCs and Pres.  There's Dynastars with chicken hearts still attached.

I almost picked up both sets of dynastars but I wanted my wife to let me back into the house. so I had to limit myself to one pair.  and I wanted the Look Nevada's.  I looking forward to getting them cleaned up and taking them out for  a spin.    honestly, I didn't even look at the PRE's,  I was never very interested in that brand.  If there is something specific you guys are looking for I can keep my eye out.  Most stuff goes from $5 to $15 bucks out here in the thrift shops.

Did any of you retro grouches ever have the pleasure of owning the mythical HEAD XR-1 ? It was a monoblock construction with 4 tubular hollow channels running longitudinal so it was rather light. I bought a pair of 205's the year after they came out. Man they were crispy and the waist was located  way back so they really accentuated my early 70's jet technique. There were not very many of them made so I really enjoyed the cult status they had even when they were new. On a really cold day -15 or so I was bashing the granite-hard moguls when I was nearly hit in the face by familiar looking ski tip as it flew past my ear. I was devastated! And my ski day was ruined! I guess it might have been a combination of the radical design/materials and the low temps that did it in. HEAD stood behind them and although the XR-1 was already out of production by then they gave me a new pair of HRP Comps instead.

SL - langes - XR1s - look - scott.jpg

My friend Jack and I each had a pair. The channel covers would pop off and we would just put paper in the holes and epoxy over them to keep the snow out. Awesome skis. Look at all that sidecut! smile.gif

I found this article at blogspot when I was looking for the XR1 article.

http://skiingheritage.blogspot.com/search?q=tyler+palmer

I wasn't aware of his situation. The boots in the picture I posted earlier today were hand me downs from Tyler as were my first DH skis (VR-17s). My heart goes out to TP as he was a mentor when I was a kid. I most recently skied with him at Mt. Cranmore about 15 years ago during the Hannes Schneider Meister Cup. He has always been fun to be around and an asset to skiing and racing in particular. My heart goes out to him.

What length?   If appropriate,  I will trade you a pair of 184cm Solly Xtra Hots for those PKs.     You keep bindings.

I think we should have a hard cut-off date.   "Nothing newer than 1996".

Agreed.....kind of like vintage bikes, nothing post '83

With skis it's pre "shape", with bikes it's pre "index shifting"

I hope you didn't think I have the skis. They were pictured on that link and his name is mentioned there.  Being from Canada I don't know if I should know the name or not. What does he do, what has he done?  I could google his name and probably will  but you may have more interesting information.

Thanks loads for putting up the pics of the XR-1s !!! Mine were orange with the design way back in yellow, the HEAD logo was in white. Man I miss those skis R:I:P:

A while back in this thread some folks were discussing "doctor skis"... I believe the genre is non-competition model skis with extremely high price tags... along those lines does anyone remember the Völkl Explosion? Not to be confused with the present Explosiv model. The Explosion was the grand daddy of the doctor skis in the early 70s with a price tag of (if memory serves) 350 USD which was about double what a hot pair of competion skis cost at that time. Did anyone out there ever ski them? I always wondered if they were a dream ride.

Thrift shop find with a bonus:

nordica1.jpg

Very little wear, and the best part is that they're my size.

nordica2.jpg

Interesting heel attachment, for cable bindings?

nordica3.jpg

And the bonus, stuck in one of the boots:  A Look/Nevada binding adjustment tool!  Another $5 well spent.

These boots, K2 Holiday's with Salomon 505 bindings, steel poles, ready for retro day.  Makes up for the delaminated GTA's, and Heierling boot sole separation in my old setup:

gta1.jpg

Marker Rotomat's still fine of course, but cutting notches in the boot toe gives reason to pause.

Powder cords?  Not necessary since the invention of safety straps.

stvbck,

The guards on the heels of your boots were part of the old Look Navada binding system.  They came from the time frame where there were still leather boots. The rollers on the heel pieces were not kind to wet leather so those guards were developed.  Have not seen or thought about those in a long time.

Nice find on the old Nordicas.

My first plastic boot was a pair of Nordicas a couple years prior to these, they were 2 part, hinged with the shoe part black and the shaft red, leather liners. I drilled and bolted the the shaft to the lower, negating the hinge and added home made jet stix (clipped from a miniboggen) padded with foamrubber and lots of duct tape!

You scored well for five bucks!!! Those heel dealies are for LOOK Nevada Grand Prix bindings so the roller has a consistant surface and angle to work against, before the era of boot/binding standardization.

Great info, now the rollers make sense:
