Spademan wanted people to stop skiing on these:

Ah, the suicide heel. The perfect match for a Nevada toe.

I think from a historical perspective, the turntable heel (and long thong) with a pretty damn good toe (Look Nevada) was a real step up in safety. You at least had a fairly reliable lateral release at the toe (twisting motion) which was seen as the "leg breaker".

Remember where we came from and what was being skied before this era.........

So where are we going to today, Mr. Peabody?

The year is 1951. The place is North Conway, NH (my home town). The subject is Bear Traps, Sherman.

While not clear in the photo, the bindings are stamped with the name Carroll Reed and the skier logo used by the store. A little history follows.

Carroll P. Reed; Founder of Ski Shops, 89

Published: February 02, 1995

Carroll P. Reed, who helped define the style of American skiing through a chain of stores that carried his name and sold skis and ski clothing, died on Sunday at a nursing home near his home in North Conway, N.H. He was 89.

While recovering from a ski accident in Jackson, N.H., in 1934, Mr. Reed, a native of West Roxbury, Mass., became captivated by the Mount Washington Valley in New Hampshire, and saw its potential as a ski resort.

Within two years he founded one of the first ski schools in New England and started the first of the Carroll Reed stores, importing Scandinavian ski wear that was sold through ski shops and mail order. His holiday catalogue with a back-cover photograph of the Reed family was a favorite of his customers.

In 1969 Mr. Reed sold the chain, which by then consisted of a mail-order business, two stores and several mountain shops.

Mr. Reed also helped found the Conway Scenic Railroad, a steam excursion railroad in North Conway.

Mr. Peabody, mine are a wee bit more "patina'd" but extra points for being on Tuckerman laminate skis.....

These are made by Dovre Ski Binding, in MA, USA

Tell me more about my skis! They have no markings I've noticed except 215. How'd you know they were Tuckerman skis? I didn't.

Those are the ones I skied in Horseshoe Bowl a few years ago with leather boots.

Is that original patina on your skis? They are gorgeous. Do you have any cables like those that you aren't using? I got some 10th Mt Division skis at an auction and they came with cables that won't fit the boots I bought. My plan is to ski them at Cooper some time in my 10th Mt outfit.

Tuckerman Laminated Ridgetop Skis from the '40's. They are 100% original. I have them displayed next to my Thunderbolt 75th Aniversary banner.....

According to my parents THESE were a doorbuster deal at Sniagrab in the mid 70's.  We have 3 pairs never mounted and one pair still has the price tag on them $29.95.  Dad says these were crap skis (one wonders why they bought 3 pairs)

I'm not familiar with that ski, but looking at it it appears to be something from the 60's not the 70's.  Screw-in edges were long long gone by by the mid-70's..

Well after chatting with my folks they were bought in the 70's for $.25 a pair so the price tag was from earlier.  They were advertised as a doorbuster "skis for a quater" and these were it.  So your probably right that these were from the 60's. Never planned on skiing them I guess.  I will be grabbing more pics of the collection sometime.

If you ski on your skis from Carroll Reed, you shouldn't go out without your Carroll Reed hat.

Very nice, Choucas.

I'm digging the black and white Javelins in your stash of skis, Junkman. And I'm glad to see the K2 Comps weren't screwed to the wall.

I'll see your Carroll and raise you a Stetson Billy Kidd

Though I'd NEVER wear it skiing, only one person on the planet gets a pass to wear a cowboy hat skiing.

It is actually black, not purple haha

Oh heck no, those K2's are in too good of shape to ruin with screw holes and they are still skiable, I have 2 more pairs of those as well.  There are also some Hart Camaros in the mix as well as 3 pairs of 215cm Fisher Presidents.  Several ex-rental pairs of K2 Holiday and Powder skis.  Also several sizes of Elan GLM skis (junk) sizes rangine from 120-170.  Boots, don't get me started.

This is part of why I have the nicknam "thejunkman" amung other things we have cars, motorcycles ect.. and we usually don't just have one of anything.

Here is my dad sometime in the 60's, still have that sweater, helmet, skis, boots, poles, goggles its in my closet now.

Here is an example of my other obsession.  (I know its a skiing forum)

Those are very much like the Northlands I used.   I remember unscrewing part of the edges and cutting a big chunk of the tails off to make them shorter.  I paid more than a quarter for them at a garage salehopmad.gif  But they came with step in bindingsth_dunno-1[1].gif  Skied back country on them for two years before making it to a lift served hill in the mid 70s.

Thrift Shop Highlights!

Thrift Shopping has now expanded to out of town, here are the latest highlights:

ClearDots.jpg

Dura-Fiber, Kazama Glass Dot (imagine staring at these for too long on the lift), K2 Bermuda Shorts, and a swell pair of Sandvik STEEL poles with leather straps in need of baskets.  (These poles could double as lethal weapons)

The Dura-Fiber skis are hollow!  Two old mounting holes were revealed, so I dropped some pebbles inside and they move around from tip to tail inside the ski.

The Bermuda Shorts are destined to be cleaned up and paired with some early '70's Nordica buckle boots (another thrift shop find), perfect Mammoth on July 4th material.

And of course the vintage bindings:

Awesome. This is the ski I came to this thread to find!  My teenage years were spent tearing it up on a set of gold 175 dynastar course skis.  :)

Nice!

Here are my skis from when I was a teen.  They were delaminated and pretty rough so I turned them into a coat rack.

Sorry to reach so far back. Not mine unfortunately. Found them on a Vermont ski history web site. Says they were skiied by his mother into HER 70's. Probably have never executed an outrigger or a tip-roll.

Implementing new system:

skisrailflex.jpg

One pair bindings, several sets of plates.  Decided to go with bindings on Coyote's and Olin Comp's (747 all metal), looking forward to trying the RD's, very light ski.

Plate system also makes transport and storage of skis much easier.

The trailer for Ski Racer

The full feature.

Wow!  Thanks for posting that!

Ditto! That was fantastic! Hearing "Quicksilver Girl" again alone was worth the price of admission! ( The skiing was pretty good too! ;-)

Curious, that came out around the same time as "Downhill Racer". Know which actually came first? Was there any cross-pollination between the two?

Also, looked like the racers were freehand tuning their skis with files. was that common back then? (No file guides?)

Again, great stuff! Thanks!
