I do recall hearing something about Nordica reformulating their plastic specs in the '90s.
Funny,
There are still some people who think that modern day Nordica's explode. I had some dude on a chair I was on tell me that it might be a dangerous thing to be skiing on my super fat ski's (prophet 100's ) with Nordica boots. Because they were prone to exploding. There was an akward silence the rest of the ride.

There could probably be a separate thread on exploding boots.  Got my red and blue Nordi Grand Prixs' in 76-77.  About 92 The toe box fell off on a powder day at Silver Mt. ID, probably still pieces up there somewhere.

Not Nordica's but Technica's.

Thanks for all the feedback on the P50, folks. Don't like skidding, eh? Too short, maybe? I imagine 'em being like a pair of jittery, slithering snakes all over under my feet, ready to bite my head off if I even so much as dare using old school technique. Which is what in do. We'll see. I'll get back once I give em a go. Which would be a first, carve-wise for me. Honestly.

Btw, Rossi, you have no idea how much I envy you for those Renntigers...

Oooh, yellow p50s.     That's some pretty direct edge feel right theah.

*trying to remember whether I used abducted boots with those or not, I think yes*

Latest thrift shop finds:

thriftshopskis2.jpg

Daiwa 747 (200) Marker M36, the ubiquitous K2 5500 (190) Tyrolia 490, Dynastar GTS (150) Look GT.  Junior skis are barely used, with a nice wide center groove.  Would like to know what the Daiwa's were, GS? SL? all mtn?

Newer Nordica's of course nothing to be concerned about, current boots are Aggressor WC 150's.  Still searching thrift shops and flea markets for nice pair of rear entry boots and neon one piece powder suit to go with vintage ski collection.

Seems more than one company used that plastic.

In case you missed it

We're talking old school straight skis here? If so the Renntiger R's really set a new standard when they first showed up. Then the P9's only added to that reputation. I have found all the Volkl's from that era and beyond to be rock solid and stable. But I'm no racer, so can any of you bamboo types chime in here???

Missed it! What year are yours? Mine are 1983:

Maybe different prints for EU/US markets?

...which translates into: they'll bite your head off at even the slightest technical slip-up :-)?

My Kästle RX's do that, btw. No tolerance for sloppy skiing, it's either 110% on the ball or pay the price with a major faceplant (exploding boots nonwithstanding).

Not sure.  '84 or '85, I think.  I do recall a year or two after I bought mine, I saw a new model that had lighter metal in them.  RX SG Light?  I prefer these old skis for high speed skiing; the extra mass is somehow comforting.

Bases look the same.  I still remember peeling the protective wrapping off those bases.

Here are some pics of some retro gear I skied this season.  I had the happy experience of skiing on a pair of Head 360s with my regular Daleboots.  The 360s really lived up to their reputation -- easy to ski, solid carver.  Loved them.

2010-04 Head 360 and Daleboot at Snowbowl.JPG

Then I switiched to a pair of 1968 or so vintage Head GS Competitions, which I skied on pair of leather Raichle boots.  I piked up this set of skis, boots and poles on Ebay.  These GS Comps were nothing like the 360s.  But at high speed, they held a great edge.  I learned to ski on leather boots with wooden skis and bear trap cable bindings, so this was a step up.  I feared I would not be able to turn these skis with the Raichle leather boots, but I just pretended I was back in the mid 1960s, and it all came back to me.  I'm going to take this set out again next season.

I had an absolute blast on the Hanson Spyders and The Skis.  I had to take out the wax bladders to fit into the Hanson boots, and they were comfortable as hell without the bladders.  And flexed just great.  And, the The Skis, which I paid about $5 for at a Goodwill store, skied just great.  They are in almost new condition and skied like it (I had a matched blue and yellow pair that were 1976 vintage, and they were just about my favorite skis, although I say that about just about every ski!).

Lastly, and I don't know why this underscoring started, which I can't get rid of, I skied on a pair of Volkl Explosiv Rs, slaloms, with Salomon SX91 Equipes.  I always liked the SX91 because of its adjustability and comfort.  Again, I paid about $7 for the skis and boots at a thrift shop.  The SX91s were so comfortable, I felt like skiing in them the whole rest of the day.  And the Explosivs skied just great.

I hope you enjoyed the photos.

Cold Warrior....some real nice gear there! I agree completely about the Head 360's. It's easy to see why they were so popular back in the late 60's! Some real good binding choices on those skis in your pictures as well!

When I started skiing we put these on our feet. If I remember correctly the 2 big ski boot company's back in those days were Heinke & Molitor. Notice the metal boot tree, I still have mine. It's over the fireplace in VT. with my Molitor boots in them. 2 sets of lacing, inside & out, the ones pictured look like single lace. Sorry don't have a picture of mine but this pic should give you an idea.

Cable bindings that you had to bend over & push the lever forward were the bindings of the day. I wonder how many people would be willing or able to do that to ski nowdays?

Tele skiers do it every day.

Here is a picture I bought from a pro at the Jimmie Heuga race.

The style looks about the same as this photo where the skis (and skier) match the era the photo was taken.

That turned out pretty nice Doug!

I have a pair of those same red Lange boots. The plastic used in those is really good -- every pair I have seen still look pretty new.
Hi MWP,

Thanks. Do you know the year of the boots? You have the orange Banshees, right? I was pretty comfy in these boots, both fit and function. I was really impressed, although a colder day may have made them a bit stiffer.

I have the exact red pair you do. For some reason I am thinking those are about 73/74? They pre-date my magazine collection.

Your photo could easily be turned into line art with Photoshop and printed on a t-shirt.

So here's most, but not all, of the collection.  Question is:  Which of these skis, if any, are notable, and should NOT be used for novel construction projects?

My second pair of skis, gifted along with Explodica's which did.

And the first pair actually purchased, to meet an untimely end in the hands of an incompetent ski tech.

Something went wrong with the first picture, try again:

Oh well, too late for the P20's, the only consideration at the time was to use the longest skis available.  But now I know to save the next pair I come across.  I do have another pair of Olin Racing Comp SL's.
Skis I liked from those rafters:
Pre 1200
Rossi ST Comp
K2 244 Mid, both versions
K2 Comp 710.

I'd take that pair of K2 712s and ski them if they are sound.  But, I wouldn't pay much money for them.  If you can't send them to me chop away!

I'd say basically save anything that's straight.
