Having a ball reading this thread, 25 pages so far.  Here's a poster I got at Stapleton Airport in 1975:

those are those old steel skates that had side grippers that gripped the souls of your shoes. funny clipped to the skis, it would actually work as an adequate clamp.

I was giving serious thought to taking out my "H"art F17s tomorrow until the Look 3DXP03 heel exploded while I was popping in a boot to check the forward pressure.  It's funny and convenient how the old plastic heel pieces typically  blow apart when we step in instead of afterward while we are skiing on them.  At least that has been my experience.  Most blow up eventually, but it always seems to happen right when you step in to or out of one, not while you're skiing in them.  Anyway, I'll be trying to blow up the Marker M51s on my K2 Fours instead with a post millenium pair of Heads in the ski box should I have a problem.  Now begins another thrift store scavenger hunt for something else to mount on the F17s.

Phil, got a spare cabinet door handle that would match so I don't have to redrill them?  I don't mind keeping the toes as is.

Somewhere in this thread is a picture of someone famous in this sweater....

Well, I'm not famous, but this sweater rocks, even by today's standards of ski wear!
Yeah Baby!

^^^^I <3 that The Ski  sweater.  I used to have a yellow White Stag sweater with livesaver type bands on the upper arms.  I also had the matching vest.

I backed out of rocking the Fours yesterday.  I had far too crappy of a parking spot to consider stepping in to potentially unstable bindings.   In other words I wasn't going to risk having to take the shuttle bus back to the wagon to swap skis should I have a problem with the retro gear..  Very sad too, The conditions were perfect for high speed cruising.

Greetings from The Netherlands (look ma, no mountains...), oh Ye Gods of Old Skool Skiing!

Oh my, this is some blizzard of aahhh's, this thread... ! I've spent hour after delightful hour already looking at all that beautiful gear & reading your stories: so much I recognise from the 70's/80's! Whist basking in the magnificience of the humoungous collections I see before me here, please allow me to humbly share the measly few pairs I currently own:

P1000570.jpg

P1000582.jpg

- Authier Surf, 190cm, Tyrolia 360R. They must be mid to end 70's, maybe even beginning of 80's? Owned since new (they were my Dad's, actually, but he doesn't ski anymore at 80).
- Völkl P10 'SL', 195cm, mearly/mid 90?, Salomon 977. Found in the trash years ago.
- Völkl P9 'S' (handmade raceversion), 197cm, Geze 690R. Don't know when made, guess 80's. Gift frome an uncle.
- Kästle RX National Team Super G, 208cm, 1983, Tyrolia 380RD. Owned since new.

As far as I can recall, I have at various stages owned (I'm 44, started skiing when I was four):

- Kneissl Duroplast, orange, must be 1969/1970 (they were a gift from my German grandmother). Outgrown, obviously.
- Head, early 70's era, I believe they had a orange/yellow/red striped pattern from tip to toe. Outgrown.
- K2, mid 70's-era, white with a red stripe on the lift and a blue stripe on the right, each going from tip to toe. Remember they had Marker's, can't remember the model. Outgrown.
- Atomic ARC, think end of 70's? Outgrown.
- Rossignol ST competiton, end of 70's? Think they had Salomon 555's. Skied to threads on artificial ski slopes (plastic bristles smeared with soap, for Pete's sake!) whilst doing slalom training in the summertime in Holland & Belgium (again: we Lowlanders are a tad short on mountains...).
- Spalding, can't remember how they looked. Outgrown.
- Völkl Renntiger, the iconic yellow ones. Outgrown, sadly.
- Fischer C4 Racing, black/green/white, early 80's? Tyrolia 360R's. Wrecked after jumping off a chalet that turned out to have one floor more than anticipated. This also cost me my red Salomon SX90 Equipe boots: cracked outer shell.

and, the much beloved and sorely missed

Völkl Explosiv RS, 197cm, grey, very end of 70's or very begin 80's, Tyrolia 360R.

Without a doubt the Völkl Explosiv RS were the very very very best ski's I have ever owned: I long for them each & every time I go skiing. They could do anything: tight moguls, ripping it up going down, off-piste in the Alpine powder. You could take it easy or throttle them: they were a delight under any circumstance. I skied them right through the mid 90's until there was absolutely no tension in them left: the camber was completely gone. I threw them away when I moved at one time or another end of 90's, the attached Tyrolia 360R's included. Oh, the carelessness of youth... If I can ever find a pair of Explosiv RS in good shape again, I would buy them instantly, probably at any price. As a matter of fact, I've just bought a pair of identical-looking 190cm Explosiv 'S' with Tyrolia 350's at eBay.de for the hefty sum of €1...  Will post a better picture when they arrive.

Völkl Explosiv S.JPG

Anyways, thanks for the wonderful stories & pictures and for making me feel old!

Cheers from the North Sea Coast,
Jurgen

Took out my yellow/blue The Ski today. I remembered not to try to carve at all and just sty upright and a-frame a lot. After a couple of runs, I was having a great time, I am surprised how well a 35 year old ski stood up. The Ski held up a bit better than The Binding, a Tyrolia 350R, the heel screw that held into the zipper sheered just after a run down Tunkhannock. I think I have another one to fix it with.

All these retro memories made me go out and rummage through my old ski memorabilia, where I stumbled across these pins:

P1000526.jpg

Anyone even remotely interested in knowing what these are, if not already common knowledge (if deemed OT, then my apologies)?

We had "Retro Day" at the Instruction Center at Alpine Valley last Sunday.   What a blast!  We're going to make it an annual event during Alpine's Mardi Gras.  I had a bunch of neon stuff from the 80's that I brought in to pass around.  I even found a retro belt to strap down the shoulder. :D.  Fun memories!RetroAnnie.jpg

How is it that I keep missing chances to ski with you?

We were supposed to head up to Crystal next week Trekchick, but I had to finally bite the bullet and schedule my shoulder surgery.  I'm going in Tuesday.

A good friend of mine has a place near Crystal and we definitely plan on going up next year.  I promise to get in touch with you when we do.  I would love to make a few runs with you!!!!

Thanks!

As for the bronze/silver/gold pins: in Switserland, at least in the 70's (maybe also later), you could take a series of ski tests. I believe they were even FIS-accredited? Anyways, as one progressed through the system of ski classes, you could take the bronze, silver and gold ski test. Fiercely coveted these pins were, and we (in my case think 8-12 years old) wore them with great pride :-)!

The green pin is the famous Swiss 'Teste Parallele'. You could take it invitation-only, and only if you had already made it to gold. I vividly remember the cream of the ski school instructors being present when we (just a handfull) took it (I was... 13-14 years old). We had to go down extreme chutes (jump-turn all the way, yeeha!), steep & deep moguls, off-piste and down all sorts of stuff for a whole saturday afternoon (no classes, so they had the time), with instructors both in front setting the pace, and behind checking out your skills. The grand finale was a rather nasty slalom course, where you had to finish within 5% of the best time set by the instructors (who in Switserland, as is common knowledge, were born with ski's already attached). I remember at least half of my group failing the test because they were too slow in the slalom race. Obviously, you were very, very, very cool, having this pin :-)

Finally, the red one is the official Swiss ski school instructor pin! At 16, I became a part-time instructor at the ski school in Chateau d'Oex (where I got to handle the non-French speaking tourists). Did this from 1982 to 1987. Happy days... :-)

Hurray! Look what just got delivered today! My new Völkl Explosiv's! They're 190cm (tad too short, but beggars can't be choosers alass), with Tyrolia 350's. Look pretty used and haven't been skied upon for ages, but with some elbow grease and the proper TLC, we'll have them back in shape in no time!

Hmmm. Just noticed that the Tyrolia 350's on my new Völkl's have been badly mounted: one set is almost a full centimeter further down the ski than the other .

P1000603.jpg

Which immediately begs the following question: should I swap these Tyrolia 350's with the Tyrolia 360R's I have on the Authiers?

P1000571.jpg

Whadya think?

I am running 350R's on my The Ski, they work fine. I had 350D's, but mine didn't have brakes. I think the hole pattern of the 360 is different.

Interesting little buggers.

I've always wondered about how these crazy things worked.
Pretty simple and well thought out.

The bindings on the Hexcels are Spademan's SRS Super II (with red plastic trim and gold spring.) made for "The Extreme Skier" as they stated in their literature.

The levels of adjustment:  Green / Beginner
                                          Yellow / Intermediate
Red /  I want to end up in the Hospital.

Hey I got it. All you can do is ask. If that doesn't work try to trade for something that they need or want. If you own a pair of Spademans print out a hard copy. I think you could say this info. is very rare.

Next project / task talking to Dr. Spademan. I heard a rumor that he recently licensed some company to make bindings????????? One way to find out. Ask the source. If you have any questions you would like answered. Send them to me soon.

Then this post from two years ago:

The kids (7y boy & 4y girl) loudly expressed extreme discontent that 'their' ski's weren't on the web, and "yours are!". So, there:
