I am still kicking myself about having left a beloved pair of K2 812s behind at my house in Big Bear City, CA when I was forced to sell it. Also left behind two pairs of The Ski (a black pair and a yellow/blue pair I had owned since 1976). Also several pair of Elan MBXs, including one pair that had the "Made in Yugoslavia" imprint on them. I always referred to them as my "Commie skis."
Here I was back in 1997, having just purchased a fixer upper in Big Bear, thinking I was going to be dropping out of the rat race and enjoying a future of instructing at Bear Mountain and Snow Summit and practicing a little law and maybe writing and then -- blammo -- along comes our daughter out of the petri dish follow soon thereafter by triplet boys. Good bye fixed up mountain home, hello box in the desert (in-laws live in Tempe, AZ, so that's where we ended up).
But at least I've been able to get away and ski as much as possible. Even taught part-time one season at Ski Sunrise before the kids were old enough to ski. Now I've got two who like it and one of my sons, who just turned nine, can go basically wherever I go (well, maybe not quite), but he keeps up with "old warrior" at least on the ridge at Snowbowl and all three peaks at Ski Sunrise. Our daughter is pretty strong, too.
Now if I can just convince my wife to let me take him and my daughter to Zermatt, where I skied last March for a week . . . .
Hey, do you know my buddy Steve Rice (about 48)? He was an instructor at Ski Sunrise a few years back -- now he works at A-basin on the weekends and is an emergency helicopter dispatcher in Denver during the week...
