Salomon Poweraxe Sport (2001) vs. Poweraxe Energy 2 (2002)

Okay, this might be a silly question, but I am looking for some input on these Sollie Riser plates. I keep up with the skis quite a bit since my departure from the shop world, but I can't say the same for bindings, so I turn to the Bears for wisdom and knowledge. I have a pair of Axis X Pro's that I will be mounting a Sollie 912 PS (Poweraxe Sport) 2001 model with, but I have the inside line on a 912 Ti PE2 (Poweraxe Energy 2) 2002 bindings. Is there any benefit of going with the new 912TI PE2 binding vs. the sport version? I understand the differences of the titanium in the binding itself, but I am a bit confused as to the difference in the Poweraxe plates. How are they different (if they are) and would I notice? Thanks.

The DR (flex index)of the plates are different. The PS has a flex index of 75 while the Pe2 has a flex index of 130 for this season. Last years PE only had a flex of 110 and i was told that there was little difference between the two bindings, unless you were going to be skiing on harder snow. For harder snow obviously the stiffer binding is a better choice. I have the S912 Ti PE on my Xscreams because i ski in the east so it made sense to spend the extra few $$ on the stiffer lighter binding, and they do make a difference on the hard pack groomed surfaces. My guess is that skiing at Mammoth you will not need the extra stiff ness of the PE2 binding, but on the contrary, seeing that you are on the Axis X Pro, this shows that you are probably a pretty aggressive skier, so you may in fact want to go with the stiff binding because a stiff setup may lend itself to what you are more comfortable skiing on. It really will come down to what you think you will need. Both bindings are excellent, the Pe2 just being more aggressive of a binding. Good luck wiht your choice.

Bandit Man, That soft material under the binding that you can easily press with your finder, creates a spongie ride. It (the PS) is intended to make a more comfortable ride for intermediate skiers. The PE is intended to intensify rebound for more performance oriented skiers. If you can get a deal, go with the PE, otw go with the plain binding. I went with the plain binding because of the price ($300 +) of the PE. Sell the PS. Oh, the Ti is just the plate in back of the heel, saves 20 grams I think.

Actually the Ti part of that binding is the entire heel, the heel peice is made of titanium and save a significant amount of weight. In many shops there are 2 comparison heel peices that customers can pick up and look compare. The difference in weight is belive is closer to 100 - 150 grams per half pair. I would ski the PE's.

Hey guys,

I really appreciate the help. Heluvaskier, your detailed info was great! I do want a binding that helps aid in the stability of the ski at mach speeds. I have been asking around at shops, and nobody could tell me what you did. I am thinking more about the PE2. I have a buddy who is interested in the 912 PS, so I think he might inherit those. Thanks again for such great info.
