What, no hockey fans? - Page 22
Wouldn't disagree with you at all. Crosby's goal to force overtime was a great bit of puck-handling and really showed off his fantastic touch (especially considering this was the third or fourth time he has pulled off a goal like that). But he would never have had the puck in the first place if the Cap's defence hadn't thrown a blind pass/turnover right to the Pen's D.
I was also agree that stamina should be part of the package. If your team has the depth to roll 4 lines, then you should be rewarded. My point was more around the comments that hockey is a niche sport and this being the NHL's best match-up (superstar vs superstar), I just thought the NHL would be working harder to make sure that both teams could bring their best games. But, then again, the NHL (or maybe Versus) does seem to struggle to figure out how to best bring the games to the fans. Also wish they would remember that there is a western conference and the Pen's- Cap's games are not the only ones going on! Canes-Bruins game tonight was a good one - fun to watch and some slick puck work by Boston.
Funny how when you hear talk about hockey you almost always hear talk of refereeing and penalty calls and non-calls. Even when I try my best to accept the inconsistent refereeing it still makes me shake my head in disbelief. I can't agree at all that non calls at critical junctures in a game or season makes for better hockey. Inconsistent officiating is the bane of hockey, IMO.
Remember when there was one referee and the linesmen couldn't assist in a call? Remember when the refs always swallowed their whistle in the 3rd period reasoning that officiating should not determine the outcome of a game? What a bunch of bull, ignoring the rules in favor of mayhem does not elevate the stature of the game, it does not highlight the skill of the game, the very opposite happens, it allows talentless teams to rely on thuggery to win games and allows skilled players to resort to needless violence.
The NHL recognized that as a problem and now have 2 refs and linesmen can assist in penalty calls yet here we are still talking about officiating. How about the refs make an honest attempt to call penalties and the NHL tries to ensure consistent play call? How about calling a penalty in the 3rd or in the playoff the same as you would in the first or regular season. How about some discipline from the NHL when refs consistently call bad games. Hockey fans may love it and perhaps the NHL can live with a limited base but it seems they want to promote the skilled players. The NHL must mature beyond the need for 'enforcers' or 'sending a message' at the end of a losing game or there will be no significant growth of the sport.
As long as you have situational officiating and maverick referees hockey will always be only one step above wrestling.
My dad (old high school hockey coach) used to joke about the "moving the marble" call. Meaning that the ref's kept a marble in their pocket to remind them which team was supposed to get the next penalty and would then 'move the marble' to the other pocket, so he would know which team would get the next call.......
There are games where this really seems to be true.......
Horrible choke job by the Washington D. After the first 3-5 minutes of the game, they basically stood around and gave the puck away. And every turnover seemed to make them more nervous and the Pen's skate even harder. Clearly the Cap's were not ready to play tonight. Congrat's to the Pen's!
Finally, the Pens got to Varlamov. I like this type of game, what a blow out. The Caps were tough but the Pens kept up the pressure and finally got to the rookie. This series was a great one and I hope the win take the Pens to the next level, only eight more and Lord Stanley's Cup will be in the Burgh.

I'm curious myself. I think Boston overall is a bit deeper team and surely riding the momentum back to Beantown tonight.
Ward is a big wild card though....and the Canes blue line sure can net the puck.
I'd love the Canes next for nothing more than home ice, but I'm guessing we're going to get Boston. My gut tells me they will take it tonight.
In the West, I would love nothing more than the Ducks to wrap it up at the Joe. Send Judas home early with no Cup.
Lemme see. The Wings have their Geritol and the Penguins have Tennesee, Chumbley, and their coach Mr Whoopie with his 3d Blackboard right?
We'll see how they do against a team that has been conference champions twice in the past 5 years. I'm really digging myself a hole should the Canes get stomped
WHEN the Cane's get stomped
Cam Ward lived every goalie's worst nightmare -- twice: He had both Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin charging hard at him on breakaways.
"You try to put yourself in the best position, and make yourself look big," Ward said. "And, hopefully, he hits you."
He stopped both Pittsburgh stars to help the Carolina Hurricanes advance to the playoffs for the first time in three years.
Ward stopped 33 shots and matched a club record with his 38th victory of the season, and Carolina beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in overtime Saturday night to wrap up its first postseason trip since 2006.
Anyway last time they met it was a very good game. Get ready for at least 4 more.

Who is ready for some final four hockey?
Out west it's the old guard against the kids, will Detroit's Geritol hold out?
Back east it's the Pen's battling the Whaler Lite's, similar styles but do the Cane's have the depth?
I think we may have a rematch of last years finals.......

I'm really hoping for the opposite.. Canes VS Hawks. I've already seen the Hurricanes VS the Wings for the cup and didn't like the way it turned out. Whose to way how it would go this year. I wore a Hawks sweater around town yesterday and fielded a few comments. Ironically, it is an old #7 Chelios Blackhawks jersey. Like you all, I'm jut glad I still get to see some good hockey for the conference championships. Not sure who I'll pull for yet if it ends up being Wings and Gwins again, probably the Wings, one more for Chelios!
I'd lay odds on Boston VS New York at Fenway.. Maybe the Bruins could come out in Mystery Alaska uniforms and all the folks could be sitting there reading the newspapers when the Ranger team is announced.
Them old guys looked pretty good last night.......the kid's may have their hands full
Now...Who's ready for some Pen's action tonight. I hope this proves to be a good series, we'll see
Also, a little family fun......vvvvvv
OK that went much better than Game 1 in Boston. Lost by one after having a goal taken away and playing without Rutu and Cole for most of the third period. We're the underdog, I'm not worried, but you should be after how much trouble they had tonight. It ain't going down easy at all.
