They are coming to our barn Thursday. Max gets to see his old pals.
Injuries, youth, roster, coaching??? Kick them in the ass!
Probably all of the above. They started the season horribly out of sync, and it just kind of snowballed. I think a few of the "core" players were a little bit too satisfied over the summer. Rumors are that Roy took some of them aside a few weeks back and let them know in no uncertain terms that they aren't nearly as good as they think they are. Depth is an issue, and they did address that (or at least tried) over the summer, but then some of them got injured. Just too many AHL-level players on D and the bottom 6. Varly keeps getting hurt, and the second-string goalie has been inconsistent. Good news is that the third goalie, Pickard, is a gem of a discovery. So there's that.
Losing Stastny didn't help, either. And moving MacKinnon from wing to center (his natural position) didn't go well, which was to be expected that he would struggle at first. He's barely 19, and other teams are doubling up on him, and he will figure it out sooner or later. But it's kinda ugly right now. Roy hasn't hit on the right line combos, which I don't know if that's a coaching thing or what.
So all this, and they are just gripping the sticks. Last year they were loose, this year they are tight. And the giveaways, ugh. Things are a little better than the first month of season, but last year they won the one-goal games, this year they are losing them. Margins are slim in the NHL.
