No. The recall wasn't safety related. The vent open/close mechanism wasn't doing it's job correctly on a certain percentage of helmets. So Smith was faced with the choice of 1) letting the helmets sit there and wait for a potential deluge of warranty claims, or 2) recall all of them, and manufacture an entire new run that fixes the problem. They choose number 2, which I think says alot about the company.
It occured in November of last year and apparently fairly soon after the helmets first hit the shelves so I'm sure all of the affected helmets are long gone.
I've rocked the Variant all winter and it's been a great helmet. In fact, I firmly believe it saved me big time during a nasty fall back in February that ended up splitting the darn thing.
If it fits your head correctly (i.e. generally fits more roundish type heads where I've found Giro for instance is a better fit for ovalish type heads), it's a great option.
