Why is the time limit on editing posts so short?

Thread Starter
I posted something about 18 hours ago, and wanted to edit slightly. . . but no edit button is available. I thought I used to have longer than that to edit my posts. Would think you'd have at least 24 hours?

For future reference, what is the time limit and why?

I think I understand why the time is limited, but I'll let someone else explain. I'll just say 'plus 1' on extending it a bit.

This came about, just about the time Mollmeister took leave for a little break.
It seems that there were some "users" who were editing posts longe after other posters referred to them, which made the person replying look like a total idiot.
I was not the person to implement the edit time frame, but I do understand the moderation nightmare end of what happened at the time.

Moll, if you want something edited, please feel free to contact me or one of the other mods. We are all too happy to help out.

Hope this helps.

Of course, some persons (not on this thread !) look like complete idiot anyway, even when original posts are not edited.

We'd prefer that those who look like idiots, do so of their own accord.

What part of "Trekchick is blonde" didn't you understand?

The time limit is 1 hr.

...and after 20 minutes, you get a note that you've edited it. Before that, you can edit without a notice (which I admit I often use for typos, etc.).

Is there an option in vBulletin to allow editing as long as there has not been another post added to the thread, no matter how long it has been? That might help in some of these cases.

Unfortunately, no, but that would be a great idea!

Actually, I extended the time limit to 2-hours about 4-months ago because it pissed me off to lose a post if it either timed out or exceeded the edit limit. Since doing this, I haven't had ANY requests from a member to edit a post. Also, I have not personally seen this feature abused by members. If a post is edited, the notation shows up as edited, besides, that's why we have a Quote function. IMO, sometimes it helps to give some extra time to reconsider a comment and allow editing or adding a poll. Things tend to cool off with time, and a reconsidered comment is usually a better one..
